Successful Treatment of Heart Defect Without Open-Heart Surgery at PIMS Hospital

Udaipur: Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS Hospital), Umarda, have achieved a major medical milestone by successfully treating a heart defect without performing open-heart surgery.

Chairman Mr. Ashish Agrawal stated that the cardiology team at PIMS treated a 13-year-old patient by closing a hole in the heart without any surgical incision. The treatment was provided free of cost under the Chiranjeevi Scheme.

Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Mahesh Jain, along with his team, performed a PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) device closure procedure to treat the congenital heart defect. Mr. Agrawal explained that normally, the passage between the two major arteries of the heart closes naturally within a few months after birth. However, in some cases, it remains open, which is commonly referred to as a “hole in the heart” and medically known as PDA.

Dr. Mahesh Jain further explained that patients suffering from this condition often experience breathlessness while walking fast or climbing stairs, dizziness, weakness, and slower physical development compared to others. In this procedure, the defect is closed using a special umbrella-shaped device consisting of two discs connected by a tube-like structure. The device is inserted through a catheter and guided to the heart to seal the opening.

The procedure was successfully carried out by Dr. Mahesh Jain. Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodia and CTVS Surgeon Dr. Vivek Rawat also played significant roles in the treatment.
