Medical College Students Oppose Opening of Liquor Shop Near Campus in Sri Ganganagar

Sri Ganganagar: Students of the government medical college located on Suratgarh Road have raised strong objections to the Excise Department’s approval for opening a liquor shop near the college premises.

A group of around 15–20 students submitted a memorandum to the District Collector demanding cancellation of the permission granted for the liquor outlet, which is planned directly opposite the medical college. The students stated that the presence of a liquor shop would negatively impact the environment and discipline of the campus.

They pointed out that more than 500 nursing and medical students are currently studying at the college, and a girls’ hostel is also located within the campus. The students warned that the opening of a liquor shop nearby could disturb the social atmosphere and pose risks to student safety and well-being.

They also recalled that around three years ago, a similar attempt to open a liquor shop at the same location was opposed by locals and eventually withdrawn. The students have now demanded that the permission be revoked and that no liquor shop be allowed at this site.

It is worth mentioning that the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had also strongly opposed the proposal earlier, when it came to light that the Excise Department was planning to issue an NOC for the shop. NSUI members had staged protests at the Collectorate on two to three occasions demanding that the NOC not be issued. However, the NOC was eventually granted.

The memorandum submitted to the District Collector included NSUI District Vice President Himanshu Sisodia along with medical college students Lokesh Kumar, Sahil Chaudhary, Nitesh Saini, Abhishek, Rahul, Mehboob Khan, Hemant, Vijendra Kumar Veer, Neetu, Tina, and others.
