Seminar organized on the Culture and Heritage of Udaipur

Udaipur — As part of the 475th foundation day celebrations of Udaipur, a seminar on the theme “Culture and Heritage of Udaipur” was organized on the second day under the joint aegis of Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth and Lokjan Seva Sansthan. The session was chaired by Vice Chancellor Col. Shiv Singh Sarangdevot, with Chancellor Bhanwar Lal Gurjar as the Chief Guest and former Vice Chancellor Uma Shankar Sharma as the Guest of Honour.

The program began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp before the idol of Goddess Saraswati and the portrait of Maharana Udai Singh II, followed by a welcome address by Prof. Vimal Sharma.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Rajendra Nath Purohit presented a detailed account of the development of Gulab Bagh Udaipur from 1882 to 1920, explaining various phases of its construction. He noted that after the reign of Jagat Singh II, construction activities around lakes increased, which eventually led to pollution in these water bodies.

Chancellor Bhanwar Lal Gurjar emphasized that Udaipur’s journey from a small village like Picholi to its present status has been possible due to public participation, and it is now the responsibility of citizens to preserve its cultural heritage.

In his presidential address, Col. Sarangdevot stressed the importance of preserving nature, culture, and heritage. He highlighted that the traditions, values, and harmony of Mewar are unique and must be protected and passed on to future generations.

Dr. Jeevan Singh Kharkwal spoke about the condition of the region before the establishment of Udaipur, mentioning that Mewar had the capability of zinc production over 800 years ago, making it one of the earliest in the world.

Krishna Jugnu highlighted the unique identity of Udaipur, including its association with the Sisodia dynasty, traditional coins, illustrated religious manuscripts, distinctive styles of turbans, local delicacies like singhada sev and Karansahi laddoos, toys, and other cultural elements that should be preserved.

Gyan Prakash Soni explained that the city was planned in a way that people of similar professions lived close to each other, fostering community interaction. Social spaces like temples and community courtyards (nohres) served as centers for gatherings.

Dr. Uma Shankar Sharma remarked that Udaipur’s culture is as deep as its lakes, as strong as its mountains, and enriched with royal grandeur.

Jaikishan Chaube noted that in Mewar, people from all communities lived together in harmony and brotherhood.

The seminar was conducted by Dr. Kulshekhar Vyas, while Dr. Jai Raj Acharya delivered the vote of thanks.
