Successful Treatment of Rare Dual Condition—Psoas Hernia and Appendicitis—at PIMS Udaipur

Udaipur: Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) have successfully treated a rare dual condition involving psoas hernia and appendicitis.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal stated that a patient was admitted with intermittent abdominal pain for the past month, along with complaints of constipation and vomiting for three days. After detailed examination and imaging, the patient was diagnosed with a psoas hernia—a rare form of lumbar hernia occurring in approximately one in 100,000 cases—along with appendicitis.

He explained that a psoas hernia, more precisely known as a lumbar hernia, typically occurs near the psoas muscle in the superior lumbar triangle. It is extremely rare, accounting for less than 1% of all abdominal wall hernia cases in general surgical practice. In this case, the hernia sac contained the distal ileum, appendix, and cecum, making the condition even more complex. The patient, who was differently abled, received completely free treatment at PIMS under the Bhamashah Yojana.

The patient was successfully treated through laparoscopic surgery, where hernia reduction and laparoscopic appendectomy were performed in a single session. The procedure was carried out under the leadership of Dr. P. P. Sharma, Professor and Head of the Department of General Surgery. The surgical team included Dr. Shreyas, Dr. Mahavir, and Ashok, with anesthesia support from Dr. Kamlesh and Dr. Piyush.

Following the operation, the patient remained stable with no complications and was discharged in good health. This case stands as an excellent example of timely diagnosis and the effectiveness of modern minimally invasive techniques in successfully treating rare and complex medical conditions.
