According to Research, Dance Therapy Aids in the Treatment of Over 20 Ailments

A Special Feature on International Dance Day

Udaipur | On the occasion of International Dance Day, Dr. Shrinivas, Founder and President of the 'Janmat Manch' (Public Opinion Forum), stated that International Dance Day is celebrated globally.

This day is observed to pay homage to the art of dance and to promote its significance.

It was initiated in 1982 by the Dance Committee of UNESCO's International Theatre Institute (ITI) on the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, the pioneer of modern ballet.

The objective of celebrating this day is to raise awareness about dance and to position it as a vital component of education.

Dance serves to bring diverse cultures together on a common platform, thereby fostering cultural understanding and unity.

Dance is not merely limited to providing entertainment; it serves as a powerful medium for self-expression, communication, and cultural preservation.

Through dance, individuals can freely articulate their emotions without uttering a single word. It embodies unity in diversity and acts as a bridge connecting various cultures.

Therefore, one should resolve to integrate dance into daily life and utilize it to foster positivity, joy, and good health.

Shirish Nath Mathur, the Secretary of the Forum, noted that according to existing research, dance therapy is particularly effective in facilitating natural childbirth, managing depression, and aiding in cancer recovery.

Dance offers relief from various ailments; specifically, dance therapy helps alleviate psychological stress among patients suffering from depression, anxiety, and cancer.

Natural Childbirth: Regular dance therapy strengthens the pelvic muscles, thereby increasing the likelihood of a natural delivery and potentially reducing the duration of labor by an average of 1.5 hours. It boosts "happy hormones"—such as serotonin and endorphins—within the body, thereby reducing stress and potentially leading to a reduction of up to 50% in symptoms of depression.

Regular dancing also appears to be beneficial in managing conditions such as joint pain, obesity, and arthritis.

Currently, dance therapy aids in neurological rehabilitation and helps improve memory and physical balance in patients suffering from conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Furthermore, in the context of cancer recovery, it accelerates the recuperation process following chemotherapy and assists in pain management.

Mathur further asserted that, considering the demands of the present era, dance should be made a mandatory part of the educational curriculum—a step that constitutes a pressing need of the hour.

Shedding light on the subject, the forum's Joint Secretary Dr. Priyadarshi Ojha, Assistant Secretary Vinod Kumar Chaudhary, along with Dharmendra Kumar Verma, Vishal Mathur, Dr. Kunal Ameta, and others, remarked that dance acts as a bridge that brings people from diverse backgrounds closer together.

Dance is found in every corner of the globe; some renowned dance styles include French Ballet—which is exquisitely beautiful and elegant—and American Hip-Hop, which is brimming with energy and spectacular moves.

Salsa is a musical and dance form originating from Latin America, characterized by its vibrancy and rhythmic nature.

From North India, there is Kathak, a style that narrates stories through expressive gestures and intricate footwork.

From South India comes Bharatanatyam, regarded as one of the most ancient and purest forms of dance.

You do not need to be a professional dancer to enjoy this occasion; everyone can celebrate it in their own unique way! Whether it be Indian classical dance, Hip-Hop, or even freestyle—simply get up, move to the rhythm, and enjoy yourself!

In conclusion, it can be said that dance is not merely a form of entertainment or art, but a powerful medium for fostering physical health, mental tranquility, and cultural unity. This is a means to preserve our traditions and culture and to pass them on to the new generation.
