Gratitude Expressed to Union Health Minister for Issuing Guidelines and Policy for Children with Type 1 Diabetes in India

New Delhi: Heartfelt gratitude has been expressed to Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J. P. Nadda during his Gujarat visit, on behalf of mothers of millions of children living with diabetes across the country, for releasing guidelines (a guidance document) on screening and management of diabetes mellitus in children with Type 1 diabetes and for issuing a national health policy in this regard.

Dr. Smita Joshi, Executive Member of the Technical Expert Group (TEG) constituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for diabetes mellitus, health promotion, and childhood diabetes, along with Dr. Shukla Ben Rawal, Trustee of the Vasudevbhai J. Raval Charitable Trust, met the Union Minister and conveyed their deep appreciation. They extended sincere thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, J. P. Nadda, and all officials of the Ministry for this historic initiative.

It is noteworthy that recently in Chandigarh, under the Rashtriya Bal Suraksha Karyakram, a guidance document and national child health policy for screening and management of diabetes mellitus in children were officially released.

Dr. Smita Joshi and Dr. Shukla Ben Rawal, who are associated with the mission for diagnosis, care, and treatment of children with Type 1 diabetes, stated that earlier under RBSK there was no screening for children with Type 1 diabetes in India. Similarly, under the National Programme for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), there was no dedicated system for the care of children with this condition.

However, with the introduction of the new guidelines and national health policy, children across India will now be screened in Anganwadis and schools. Additionally, dedicated treatment facilities for children with diabetes will be made available in all district hospitals, along with specialized diabetes clinics under the NCD program. The Government of India’s commitment to providing free insulin and health education to children with diabetes has been widely welcomed, as it will help save millions of young lives from premature death.

They further noted that India has the highest number of children living with diabetes in the world, followed by the United States.
