Elderly Man on the Verge of Death Due to Snakebite Given New Life by Doctors at PMCH

Udaipur: With rising temperatures, reptiles have begun to emerge, leading to an increase in snakebite cases. In one such incident, doctors at Pacific Medical College and Hospital, located in Bhilon Ka Bedla, Udaipur, gave a new lease of life to a man suffering from a severe snakebite. The successful treatment involved a team led by Dr. Shaukat Ali Vohra and Dr. H.K. Panchal from the Medicine Department, Dr. Chetan Goyal and Dr. Ibrahim from the ICU, along with pulmonologist Dr. Aamir Shaukat.

The 70-year-old patient, Lalu Ram, a resident of Mandsaur, was working in his farm when he was suddenly bitten on the leg by a venomous snake. Nearby villagers heard his cries and informed his family members.

By the time his family brought him to the emergency department of Pacific Medical College and Hospital, his condition was extremely critical. The venom had spread throughout his body, his leg was severely swollen, and his lungs had nearly stopped functioning. The medical team immediately began treatment without delay.

Senior physician Dr. Shaukat Ali Vohra explained that the patient was in a state of multi-organ failure when admitted. Due to severe breathing difficulty, he was quickly shifted to the ICU and placed on ventilator support. Life-saving medications along with anti-snake venom were administered immediately.

Under continuous monitoring and precise treatment, the patient began to show improvement within a few days. Gradually, he was taken off ventilator support and has now fully recovered.

Chairman Rahul Agrawal of Pacific Medical College and Hospital congratulated the medical team, stating that their goal is to provide world-class and prompt healthcare to every individual in the region. He emphasized that in snakebite cases, the “golden hour” is extremely crucial. He expressed satisfaction that due to the team’s expertise and advanced facilities, an elderly man’s life was saved.

Dr. Vohra also advised that during summer and monsoon seasons, the emergence of snakes is common. In case of a snakebite, the patient should be kept calm and the affected limb immobilized. Most importantly, one should avoid wasting time on traditional or unscientific remedies and immediately seek hospital care, as anti-snake venom is the only scientifically proven treatment.

The patient’s family expressed their gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff for saving his life.
