Honored for Reviving a 450-Year-Old Fort Using Local Materials

Gaurav Singhvi Receives ‘Design Unfiltered Award 2026’ in Hospitality Architecture Category

Udaipur: Renowned scientific Vastu consultant, interior architect, designer, and heritage conservationist Gaurav Singhvi has been awarded the “Design Unfiltered Award 2026” in the Hospitality Architecture category. He received this honor at the “Design Unfiltered Conclave – Udaipur Edition.”

Gaurav Singhvi was recognized for his work on the conservation and revival of an approximately 450-year-old fort located in the north-western region of Udaipur. In this project, he preserved the fort’s original identity by using local materials, traditional colors, and regional plants and trees. Around 30% of the damaged structure was carefully reconstructed while maintaining its original character, resulting in more than 90% of the fort’s original structure being retained.

The fort’s walls, main entrance, and spatial character were kept intact without alteration, preserving its historical authenticity. The project exclusively used local materials such as stone and marble, along with traditional craftsmanship. Elements like Kota stone latticework, traditional jharokhas and ghokdas, and natural pigments such as yellow ochre were incorporated. The interior walls were adorned with traditional fresco art featuring Mewari blue, deep pink, and themes inspired by Krishna Leela, bringing cultural richness and aesthetic appeal to life.

All existing trees on the site were preserved and integrated into the design. The barren land was transformed into a lush landscape with natural pathways and gardens. Modern utilities were thoughtfully designed to blend with the heritage structure—for example, the overhead water tank was styled as a traditional dome to maintain the fort’s skyline, and an open-to-sky swimming pool was designed using local materials to resemble a historic baori (stepwell).

The national-level conclave received over 175 entries across various categories, including weekend homes and farmhouses, residential architecture, corporate buildings, institutional projects, hospitality architecture, hospitality interiors, café-bar lounges, retail outlets, healthcare, residential interiors, design vision, and ongoing projects. Out of these, only 39 projects were selected for nomination.

This achievement is a matter of pride not only for Udaipur but for the entire state of Rajasthan. Speaking on the occasion, Gaurav Singhvi said, “A true designer does not suppress heritage but brings it forward. This project was not just a task for me, but a responsibility towards history. It is an example of conservation and sensitive restoration, not just construction.”
