Sandalwood Forest to Be Developed Over 20 Hectares in Udaipur; Forest Minister Conducts Site Inspection

Udaipur: As part of an initiative proposed by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Forest Minister Sanjay Sharma visited Udaipur on Wednesday to inspect the site selected for the development of a sandalwood forest. The project will be developed over 20 hectares of forest land at the Kalka Mata Nursery, located near Lake Pichola.

During the visit, the Forest Minister held detailed discussions with senior forest officials, including Chief Conservator of Forests Sunil Chhidri, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Udaipur Seduram Yadav, and Deputy Conservator of Forests Mukesh Saini, regarding technical aspects of the project and security measures.

Officials informed that some naturally occurring sandalwood plants are already present at the Kalka Mata site, indicating its suitability for sandalwood cultivation. The Minister reviewed the entire area on foot and from a watchtower.

Deputy Conservator Mukesh Saini explained that sandalwood is a semi-parasitic species that cannot grow independently and requires host plants for proper development. These host plants provide essential nutrients through their roots, supporting faster growth.

At the site, host plants such as mehendi, neem hedge, and acacia are already available. Additional plants like karonda and duranta will also be planted to support the new sandalwood saplings.

On this occasion, the Forest Minister planted a sandalwood sapling to mark the beginning of the initiative. Senior forest officials also planted sandalwood and mahua saplings under the “One District One Plant” campaign. The Minister also inspected the Kalka Mata Nursery.

Several forest officials, including Chief Conservator Seduram Yadav, Deputy Conservator (North) Ajay Chittora, Shaitan Singh, Yadvendra Singh, Assistant Conservator Ghanshyam Kumawat, Ms. Surekha Chaudhary, and Rajendra, were present during the visit.
