Udaipur: The Kshatriya Kumawat Community has demanded that the government ensure a separate column for the community in caste census records and restore its original historical identity in official government documents.
A special meeting and discussion session of various organizations associated with the Kshatriya Kumawat community was held on Sunday at Bauji Palace, where several key issues concerning the community were discussed. Participants unanimously expressed anger over what they described as attempts to distort the original identity of the Kumawat community through social and political conspiracies, neglect of the community’s rights by the government, dissolution of the Architectural Board, and insensitive handling of the issue of silicosis disease affecting construction workers. The gathering also emphasized the need to prevent distortion and manipulation of historical facts.
The meeting was chaired by National Census Minister Hari Singh Ghatelwal, while the keynote speaker was Youth Wing State Minister Bharat Kumawat. Chief guest for the event was Kanhaiya Lal Nahar. Special guests included Harish Aasiwal, former Devali Panchayat President Bhag Chand Batra, Pushkar Lal Ghodela, and Advocate Bharat Ajmera.
Youth Wing District President Surya Prakash Ghodela informed that during the seminar, researcher Madan Mohan Tank, who has conducted PhD research on the Kshatriya Kumawat community, stated that the present-day Kumawat community traces its roots to the descendants of Prithviraj Chauhan. According to him, members of the community migrated to Mewar after refusing to convert to Islam and later established themselves across the country through their expertise in architecture and construction.
He claimed that the community contributed significantly to the construction of several iconic structures including the Red Fort, Kumbhalgarh Fort, City Palace Udaipur, Chittorgarh Fort, Amber Fort, the city of Jaipur, Taj Mahal, and forts associated with Shivaji Maharaj such as Raigarh and Rajgarh. He further stated that due to their architectural expertise, Maharana Kumbha honored them with the title of “Varad Putra” and granted them a separate Kumawat branch identity.
Following the meeting, a press conference was held in which the community announced its decision to submit a five-point memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister and Chief Minister regarding the protection of the community’s historical identity, social interests, and political rights. Community leaders also warned of a nationwide agitation if their demands are not fulfilled.
The memorandum includes a demand for immediate restoration and official recognition of the community’s separate and original identity in state government records.
Hari Singh Ghatelwal stated that since Independence, the Kumawat community has been struggling for recognition of its independent identity because the government has not granted the community separate status in official records and has instead grouped it with another caste category under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. He claimed this has created confusion between communities with different customs, traditions, cultures, and social practices, leading to social discord over the decades.
Kanhaiya Lal Nahar expressed surprise that such a historically rich, artistically skilled, and nationalist Sanatan community devoted to Lord Ram still has to struggle for recognition of its original identity. He described the situation as social injustice in a democratic setup and a political misfortune for the Kumawat community.
Among those present at the meeting were Girdhari Lal Bedwal, Sunil Kelugariya, Rajesh Verma, Dilip Verma, Suresh Kumar Sirswa, Bheru Lal Marothiya, Amba Lal Ostwal, Advocate Bharat Kavaya, Jagdish Dhanaria, Kundan Salwadiya, Dungar Singh, Lalit, Rohit, Saket, Hriday Raj Baberiwal, Lokesh Kumar Jhalwar, Parsaram Kavaya, Narayan Lal Anyawada, Kamlesh Anyawada, Jeevan Dhanaria, Lokesh Gothwal, and Dalpat Raj Batra along with several other members of the society.
