PIMS Hospital Successfully Performs Rare Surgery on Newborn, Gives New Lease of Life

Udaipur: A highly complex and rare surgery was successfully performed on a newborn baby at the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Umarda.

Pediatric surgeon Dr. Atul Mishra said that the baby, a resident of Udaipur, was born at PIMS Hospital with a serious congenital condition called Duodenal Atresia, in which a part of the intestine (duodenum) does not develop properly.

In addition to this, the newborn had another rare condition in which all internal organs were positioned in the reverse direction inside the body — organs that are normally on the right side were located on the left. This condition is medically known as Situs Inversus.

According to Dr. Mishra, Situs Inversus by itself usually does not cause major problems, but its presence along with Duodenal Atresia is extremely rare and significantly increases the technical challenges during surgery. Statistically, Duodenal Atresia occurs in approximately one out of every 5,000–10,000 newborns, while the combination of both conditions is found only in one among several lakh cases.

Three-Hour Complex Surgery
The challenging surgery lasted nearly three hours, during which the intestines were successfully reconstructed and connected properly. Because the organs were positioned in reverse, the procedure was especially difficult. After several days of dedicated post-operative care by the medical team, the baby has now fully recovered and has been discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Mishra added that the baby being premature and having a low birth weight of just 1.7 kg posed additional challenges.

Team Effort Behind the Success
The successful procedure was supported by the anesthesia team, including Dr. Peenu, Dr. Sakshi, Dr. Jahnavi, Dr. Tyagi, and Dr. Muskan.

Doctors from the pediatric department — Dr. Vivek Parashar, Dr. Rahul Khatri, and Dr. Manoj — along with staff members Reshma, Shiv, Rahul, Deepak, and Arun also played important roles in the treatment and recovery process.

Free Treatment Under Government Scheme
PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal informed that the entire treatment was provided free of cost under the state government’s Janani Suraksha Yojana.

He added that PIMS Hospital is equipped with modern medical facilities and continues to make significant contributions to healthcare services in the Udaipur region.
