Engineers Take Pledge for Rainwater Harvesting: Dr. P.C. Jain

Udaipur: A pledge for promoting rainwater harvesting was administered today by noted Water Hero Dr. P.C. Jain at the auditorium of the Soil and Water Engineering Department, College of Technology and Engineering, under Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology.

At the beginning of the program, Dr. Manjeet Singh welcomed Dr. Jain and introduced him to the audience.

During his presentation, Dr. P.C. Jain emphasized the urgent need for rainwater harvesting in Rajasthan, stating that the state records the highest groundwater extraction in the country. He pointed out that rooftop rainwater harvesting in urban areas of Rajasthan is almost negligible, and urged everyone to actively participate in water conservation efforts.

Explaining the Dewas Water Filter System, he said that with just one centimeter of rainfall, nearly 1,000 liters of rainwater from a 1,000-square-foot rooftop can be recharged into the groundwater system. He also explained technical aspects such as how water enters the casing, how deep the casing is installed, and how a one-meter rise in groundwater level through recharge can save approximately 0.4 units of electricity.

Dr. Manjeet Singh discussed methods to prevent leaves and debris from entering rooftop harvesting systems and suggested ways to minimize wastage of rainwater. He also shared that M.Tech research projects are being conducted under his guidance to make the rainwater harvesting system more automated and user-friendly.

During the session, Dr. P.C. Jain asked students ten questions related to rainwater harvesting. Students who answered correctly were honored with mementos. The program was conducted by Assistant Professor Balram Sharma.

Students Mangesh Bharti Goswami, Rakshit Jain, Vinay Sharma, and Varsha Rani Poddar were awarded mementos for their participation and correct answers.

Filter Donated for Student Learning

Dr. P.C. Jain also donated a rainwater harvesting filter to help students gain practical understanding of the system.

At the conclusion of the program, Dr. Jain administered a pledge to all attendees, encouraging them to install rainwater harvesting systems in their homes before the upcoming monsoon season and inspire others to do the same.
