New Delhi/Mumbai | On Saturday, May 16, at the world-renowned 79th Cannes Film Festival 2026, a special screening and Red Carpet premiere will be held for John Abraham's acclaimed Malayalam film 'Amma Ariyan' (Report to Mother, 1986)—the only Indian feature film selected for a World Premiere this year.

Restored in 4K by the Film Heritage Foundation, Mumbai, this film will be screened on Saturday, May 16, at 3:45 PM at the Buñuel Theatre during the Cannes Film Festival. The film will be presented at Cannes by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur—Founder-Director of the Film Heritage Foundation, Mumbai—along with the film's lead actor Joy Mathew, cinematographer Venu, and editor Bina Paul.

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, who hails from the royal family of Dungarpur in southern Rajasthan, noted that this marks the fifth consecutive year that a film restored by the Film Heritage Foundation is having its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Among the Film Heritage Foundation's previous restorations, Red Carpet World Premieres have already taken place at Cannes between 2022 and 2025 for films such as Aravindan Govindan's 'Thamp', Aribam Syam Sharma's 'Ishanu', Shyam Benegal's 'Manthan', Satyajit Ray's 'Aranyer Din Ratri', and Sumitra Peries' 'Gehunu Lamai'. The only Indian feature film selected for a World Premiere at Cannes this year is a 4K restored print of John Abraham’s renowned Malayalam film, *Amma Ariyan* (Report to Mother, 1986), which is being screened in the Cannes Classics section.

Regarded as one of the most revolutionary voices in Indian cinema, John Abraham challenged traditional storytelling methods, aesthetic embellishments, and commercial frameworks to create films that were raw, collective, and politically charged. In 2001, the British Film Institute included this film in its list of the ten greatest Indian films of all time. Describing Abraham’s vision with precision, writer K.M. Seethi remarked: "John Abraham was among those rare individuals for whom cinema was not merely an art form, but a public act of resistance, thought, and love."

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur explained that 4K restoration is a process in which the original negatives of old films are scanned at 4K resolution (typically 3840 × 2160 pixels) in order to clean, repair, and enhance them for display. It is a labor-intensive and often expensive undertaking ($100,000+ per film). Through this process, the minutest details of the film are retrieved, colors are corrected, and dust particles present in the footage are removed. This procedure yields an image of such exceptional quality that it often surpasses the quality of the film's original theatrical release.

Notably, the 79th edition of the world-renowned Cannes Film Festival is being held this year from May 12 to May 23, 2026, in the famous French city of Cannes. This year, *The Electric Kiss* was selected as the opening film. This 12-day festival features the participation of renowned films, artists, and directors from around the world, as well as prominent figures from the film industry. Several Indian artists are also making appearances on the red carpet. Among them, the red carpet presence of Alia Bhatt, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Huma Qureshi is once again generating significant buzz this year.
