Udaipur– Museums continue to play a significant role in the history of Mewar to this day. The local Ahar civilization—dating back approximately 4,000 years—holds a distinct identity on the global stage and constitutes a vital part of our national heritage. These sentiments were expressed by Dr. Shrinivas, Founder-President of *Janmat*, on the occasion of International Museum Day. Dr. Mahawar noted that on May 18, 1983, recognizing the unique characteristics and importance of museums, the United Nations decided to observe International Museum Day. The primary objective of this initiative was to foster public awareness regarding museums and their activities, as well as to encourage people to learn about, understand, and preserve their history and rich ancient traditions.
The Archaeological Survey of India organizes numerous programs on this day. The main objective of these programs is to educate the general public, students, and researchers about the rich cultural heritage housed within various museums.
Shirish Nath Mathur, Secretary of the forum, explained that through museums, the narrative of history—spanning from ancient times to the present day—can be reconstructed and understood through the study of books, manuscripts, gems, paintings, rock art, royal decrees, copper plates, stone tools, metal artifacts, and other archaeological materials. Various objects play a pivotal role in helping one understand the culture of any nation; these items are carefully preserved within museums. Mathur further emphasized that, in the context of contemporary times, the preservation and development of museums are of paramount importance.
Museums serve as repositories of cultural heritage, housing collections of artifacts and creations that vividly reflect the history and traditions of a society.
On this occasion, Dr. Kunal Ameta, Vinod Kumar Chaudhary, Vishal Mathur, Dr. Priyadarshi Ojha, and others also shared their views. They highlighted that a museum is an institution dedicated to the care, preservation, and exhibition of works and objects possessing artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific significance. Public museums make these objects available for public viewing through exhibitions.
Furthermore, museums play a significant role in preserving our cultural heritage.
