Sri Ganganagar: A joint meeting of the Khet Evam Gramin Mazdoor Union and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) was held today at Chak 7 Zed near Sri Ganganagar. The meeting was chaired by State President Durga Swami and CITU leader Harkevaldeep Singh.
During the meeting, it was decided to launch a widespread public campaign against the growing menace of drug abuse in the region and to demand the resumption of halted MGNREGA works. Both organizations also resolved to launch the “Save MGNREGA Campaign” from Chak 7 Zed and form rural committees of the Agricultural Labour Union in around 20 gram panchayats.
Addressing the gathering, Durga Swami stated that MGNREGA is a lifeline for rural poor and labourers. She urged the government to immediately restart the suspended works and provide employment opportunities so that unemployment and migration from villages can be controlled.
Harkevaldeep Singh said that the rapid spread of drug addiction in the region is destroying the lives of youth and labour families. He emphasized that awareness campaigns would be conducted in villages to mobilize people against drug abuse, while demanding strict action from the administration.
Comrade Naresh Sharma said that the struggle for workers’ rights and employment opportunities would be strengthened at the grassroots level. In the coming days, organizational committees would be formed in every panchayat to collectively raise the issues faced by labourers.
Other speakers said that MGNREGA is an important source of employment for rural poor workers, but the closure of schemes has created severe hardships for the labour community. They also described the increasing drug addiction among youth as a serious social threat and stressed the need for a united struggle against it.
