Bees Play a Vital Role in Strengthening Animal Husbandry

Udaipur: A seminar was organized at the Government Animal Husbandry Training Institute on the occasion of World Bee Day. During the program, experts highlighted the significant role of bees in animal husbandry and agricultural production.

Deputy Director of the institute Dr. Dwarka Prasad Gupta, Senior Veterinary Officer Dr. Padma Meel, Dr. Omprakash Sahu, and Dr. Mamta Soni explained that protein-rich feed is essential for maintaining good animal health and increasing milk production. Feed containing high protein content is considered the best for livestock.

They stated that lucerne (alfalfa) is scientifically known to contain abundant protein and that bees play a crucial role in improving crop production. Without the assistance of bees, it is not possible to obtain protein-rich fodder from lucerne, which in turn affects milk production in animals.

Experts further informed that berseem and lucerne are among the most nutritious fodders for cows and buffaloes, containing 20 to 25 percent protein. The seeds of these leguminous fodder crops are produced through pollination by bees. Pollination by bees increases fodder production, ensuring adequate nutrition for animals and boosting milk yield.

The speakers emphasized that if bees disappear, it would negatively impact animal husbandry, milk production, and employment opportunities. They also noted that nearly 75 percent of the world’s food production depends directly or indirectly on bees. Conservation of bees, they said, is essential for human life and the agricultural ecosystem.

As part of the seminar, trainees Annu Chaudhary, Harsh Kumar Meena, and Kuldeep Bagora participated in an essay competition and spoke about the theme of World Bee Day 2026: “Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All” and “Working Together for People and Planet.” They highlighted that the relationship between humans and bees dates back thousands of years and cited reports suggesting that the bee population in India has declined by nearly 40 percent.

During the event, trainees were administered a pledge for the conservation and promotion of bees. Several trainees including Sanjay, Tanuj, Sunil, Dinesh, Krishnakant, Anil, Ganesh Yogi, Ajay Saini, Prakash Saini, and Durgasingh participated in the seminar.
