International Day for Biological Diversity Celebrated at Rajasthan College of Agriculture

Udaipur: On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, Rajasthan College of Agriculture organized various awareness programs. Speaking at the event, former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dr. N. C. Jain emphasized the need to conserve local biodiversity. He stated that protecting traditional water sources, indigenous seeds, medicinal plants, and wildlife is both our cultural and environmental responsibility. He added that biodiversity can be preserved by promoting water conservation, organic farming, and plantation activities through community participation in rural areas.

Chief Guest Dr. R. L. Soni, Director of Extension Education, said that due to climate change, deforestation, uncontrolled urbanization, industrial pollution, plastic waste, and excessive exploitation of natural resources, many species of plants and animals are on the verge of extinction. He warned that if timely and effective measures are not taken, ecological imbalance could create a serious crisis for human life in the future.

Special Guest Dr. Manoj Mahla, Dean of Rajasthan College of Agriculture, stated that biodiversity is the fundamental basis of life on Earth. Various plants, animals, birds, insects, microorganisms, and natural ecosystems play a vital role in maintaining environmental balance. He said biodiversity is not limited to natural beauty alone, but is also directly linked to human life, agriculture, medicine, water conservation, food security, and economic development.

Program organizer Dr. Kapil Dev Ameta informed that the United Nations observes the International Day for Biological Diversity every year on May 22. This year’s theme, “Local Actions for Global Impact,” aims to raise awareness among people worldwide about nature conservation and highlight the role of biodiversity in achieving sustainable development goals.
