Protected Farming to Transform the Future of Farmers

Greenhouse and Shade Net House Technology to Increase Farmers’ Income

Sri Ganganagar: In the changing agricultural landscape, farmers are increasingly facing challenges such as uncertain weather conditions, continuous temperature fluctuations, and climate change. In the current scenario, “protected farming” is emerging as a modern and profitable solution for farmers. Through Greenhouse and Shade Net House technologies, farmers are successfully cultivating high-value vegetables, flowers, and fruits in controlled environments, leading to better production and higher income.

The primary objective of protected farming is to provide crops with a favorable environment by controlling agro-climatic factors such as temperature, humidity, and sunlight. This enables farmers to grow off-season crops and secure better market prices for their produce. Horticultural crops such as tomato, capsicum, cucumber, rose, gerbera, and strawberry are being successfully cultivated in greenhouses and shade net houses.

Under the initiative of Chief Minister Mr. Bhajanlal Sharma, the State Government is also providing subsidies to encourage protected farming. Farmers from the general category are eligible for a 50 percent subsidy for up to 2500 square meters, based on either the prescribed unit cost or the rates approved by the department, whichever is lower. Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and small and marginal farmers are eligible for subsidies of up to 70 percent. This financial assistance is proving highly beneficial in helping farmers adopt modern agricultural technologies.

To avail the benefits of the scheme, farmers must possess cultivable land and an irrigation source. At the time of application, applicants are required to submit documents including proof of land ownership, land map trace, soil and water testing reports, quotations or invoices from empaneled firms related to construction costs, and caste or small/marginal farmer certificates wherever applicable.

The application process under the scheme is simple and transparent. Farmers can apply online through their nearest e-Mitra center or directly via the “Raj Kisan Saathi Portal” using their Jan Aadhaar number. Eligible beneficiaries are selected through a combination of the “first come, first served” method and a lottery system in a 50:50 ratio.

Protected farming not only helps increase farmers’ income but also ensures higher productivity with less water, better quality crops, and effective pest and disease management. The technology is attracting young farmers toward modern scientific farming and giving a new direction to innovation in the agriculture sector.

Technologies such as Greenhouses and Shade Net Houses are expected to play a significant role in making agriculture more profitable, sustainable, and market-oriented in the coming years. If farmers adopt protected farming using scientific methods, they can achieve higher production even on smaller landholdings and set new examples of economic prosperity.
