Meeting Held to Prepare MPUAT’s Ten-Year Seed Production Plan

Udaipur: A significant meeting was held on June 1, 2026, under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pratap Singh at Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology (MPUAT), Udaipur, with the objective of expanding and strengthening the university’s seed production programme over the next ten years.

Welcoming the Vice-Chancellor, Director of Research Dr. R. L. Soni highlighted the importance of seed production and its vital role in agricultural development. Thereafter, Associate Director (Agriculture & Farms) Dr. Hemlata Sharma presented a detailed progress report on the university’s ongoing seed production programmes and provided an overview of the current seed production status.

During the meeting, farm in-charges from various colleges, research stations, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) presented assessments of the land, resources, and production capacities available at their respective farms. They also submitted tentative seed production plans outlining targets and opportunities for enhancing seed production over the next decade. These inputs will serve as the basis for preparing a coordinated Ten-Year Rolling Seed Production Plan at the university level.

Extensive discussions were held regarding the possibilities for increasing seed production across the university. Addressing the participants, the Vice-Chancellor directed all farm in-charges and scientists to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the resources and capacities within their respective areas and prepare concrete and effective action plans to enhance seed production.

He emphasized that no university land should remain unused or unproductive. Cultivable land should be prioritized for seed production, while areas unsuitable for crop cultivation should be utilized for establishing nurseries, vermicompost units, plant production facilities, protected cultivation systems, or other income-generating enterprises. Such initiatives, he stated, would ensure optimum utilization of available resources, increase the university’s revenue, and further strengthen its self-reliance.

The meeting was attended by Dr. R. N. Soni, Director of Research and Director of Extension Education; Dr. M. K. Mahla, Dean, Rajasthan College of Agriculture; Dr. S. S. Lakhawat, Director, Regional Research Station, Udaipur; Dr. Hargilas, Director, Regional Research Station, Banswara; Dr. Hemlata Sharma, Associate Director (Seeds & Farms); along with farm in-charges and scientists from across the university.
