Five-Year-Old Girl Triumphs Over Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Udaipur: The Children’s Hospital of Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital, affiliated with Rabindranath Tagore Medical College, has achieved another remarkable and historic milestone in the field of healthcare. A five-year-old girl from Rajsamand district has made a complete recovery from the rare and life-threatening neurological disorder Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) after nearly 90 days of intensive treatment and medical care.

The child was brought to the hospital with complaints of weakness in both legs. Doctors promptly diagnosed her condition as Guillain-Barré Syndrome and immediately initiated treatment. Given the severity of her condition, she was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where she required prolonged ventilator support due to progressive respiratory complications.

Considering the need for long-term respiratory assistance, a tracheostomy procedure was performed by the ENT Department. During her nearly 80-day stay in the PICU, she received intensive medical management, regular physiotherapy, and specialized nutritional support, including eggs, milk, and other protein-rich foods provided free of cost to aid muscle recovery. These interventions played a crucial role in her successful rehabilitation.

₹5.31 Lakh Treatment Provided Free Under Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya Scheme

During the course of treatment, the patient received five doses of Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG), each costing approximately ₹40,000, with a total value of around ₹2 lakh. The medication was provided completely free of cost under the Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya (MAA) Scheme. Overall, treatment expenses amounting to ₹5,31,900 were fully covered by the government and hospital administration under the scheme, ensuring that the family did not bear any financial burden.

Advanced Critical Care Capabilities Demonstrated

Dr. Rahul Jain, Principal and Controller of Rabindranath Tagore Medical College, stated that successfully treating a five-year-old child suffering from a severe neurological condition such as Guillain-Barré Syndrome reflects the world-class capabilities of the institution’s advanced critical care facilities.

“This achievement is not only a success of modern medicine but also a testament to the unwavering dedication of our doctors and the strength of the Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya Scheme, which made such an expensive treatment accessible to a financially disadvantaged family. The RNT administration remains committed to providing high-quality healthcare services to every citizen of the region,” he said.

Commitment to Uninterrupted Critical Care

Dr. R. L. Suman, Superintendent of Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital, praised the coordinated efforts of the hospital team and emphasized that the institution’s primary objective is to ensure prompt and uninterrupted treatment for every critically ill patient.

“In this case, the hospital successfully managed a treatment course spanning 116 days, including ventilator support, tracheostomy surgery, medications, and free nutritional support. Through the effective implementation of the Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya Scheme, we were able to provide this complex treatment worth over ₹5.31 lakh entirely cashless and free of charge,” he said.

Timely Diagnosis and Specialized Care Key to Recovery

Dr. Vivek Arora, Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatrics, described the case as one of the department’s major achievements.

“Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rapidly progressive and potentially fatal condition in children, where timely diagnosis and access to immunoglobulin therapy are critical. Thanks to our advanced PICU infrastructure and dedicated nursing care, we were able to safely maintain the child on prolonged ventilator support and ultimately achieve a complete recovery. Seeing her discharged with a smile is the greatest reward for our entire pediatric team,” he remarked.

Multidisciplinary Effort Leads to Success

Sharing technical details of the case, Unit Head and Professor Dr. Mohammad Asif said that when the child was admitted on February 4, she had completely lost strength in both legs, and her respiratory system was also becoming affected.

“Our team immediately initiated five doses of IVIG therapy. Preventing infections during prolonged ventilator support and tracheostomy, while simultaneously accelerating muscle recovery through physiotherapy and high-protein nutrition, was a significant challenge. Continuous efforts by our doctors, round-the-clock nursing care, and the steadfast support of the family ultimately led to her complete recovery. She was discharged and returned home on May 31,” he said.

This historic achievement was made possible under the leadership of Unit Head Dr. Mohammad Asif, with the dedicated contributions of Professor Dr. Bhupesh Jain, Assistant Professor Dr. Suresh Chauhan, and resident doctors Dr. Rahul, Dr. Shintu, Dr. Nidhi, Dr. Ayush, Dr. Mukesh, Dr. Ojefa, and Dr. Anamika, along with the entire medical and paramedical team, whose commitment and expertise played a vital role in the child’s recovery.
