Save the Fields Campaign: Improve Soil Health and Adopt Natural Farming, Urges Dr. Solanki

Udaipur: Under the Save the Fields Campaign (Khet Bachao Abhiyan), a farmers’ seminar was organized by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) on June 3, 2026, in Kannauj village. The event witnessed the participation of 60 farmers, including women farmers, from Kannauj Gram Panchayat.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ratan Lal Solanki, Senior Scientist and Head of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, shared technical knowledge on sustainable agricultural practices and expressed concern over declining soil fertility and deteriorating soil health. He emphasized the need for balanced fertilizer use to maintain long-term agricultural productivity.

Dr. Solanki highlighted that the Government of India launched the Save the Fields Campaign in response to challenges related to the supply and rising costs of chemical fertilizers. He noted that excessive use of chemical fertilizers not only increases the cost of cultivation but also reduces soil fertility over time and contributes to groundwater contamination.

He explained that the imbalanced use of fertilizers has emerged as a serious challenge for agriculture. While excessive fertilizer application may initially result in higher crop yields, it ultimately becomes unprofitable for farmers as soil degradation negatively affects productivity in the long run.

Dr. Solanki advised farmers to conduct regular soil testing and make use of Soil Health Cards to adopt soil test-based fertilizer application practices. He encouraged farmers to apply fertilizers according to crop requirements and follow balanced nutrient management practices.

He also urged farmers to increase the use of organic manures, compost, and vermicompost, and to adopt natural farming methods wherever possible. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of crop rotation and green manuring as effective measures to maintain soil quality and ensure sustainable agricultural production.

Progressive farmer Mr. Khaju Khan and Watershed Secretary Mr. Shankar Lal were also present during the programme.
