PMCH Doctors Give a New Lease of Life to a 36-Year-Old Accident Victim

Life Returns After Defying the Wheels of Death

Udaipur: As the saying goes, “Whom God protects, no one can harm.” When divine grace is coupled with the expertise and dedication of doctors, even a person on the brink of death can return home smiling. A remarkable example of this was recently witnessed at Pacific Medical College & Hospital (PMCH), Bhilon Ka Bedla, Udaipur, where a 36-year-old man critically injured in a devastating road accident was successfully saved through timely intervention and exceptional teamwork by the hospital’s medical professionals.

The successful treatment involved the coordinated efforts of the Department of Chest and Tuberculosis Diseases, including Pulmonologists Dr. Aamir Shaukat, Dr. Atul Luhadia, Dr. Jalpit Patel, Dr. Nishchay Bhardwaj, and Dr. Anshul Kumar, along with ENT specialists Dr. S. S. Kaushik and Dr. Rajkumar, ICU specialists Dr. Chetan Goyal and Dr. Ibrahim, and the dedicated nursing staff.

The incident occurred when the 36-year-old man was riding his motorcycle to work and collided with a cow that suddenly came onto the road. The impact was so severe that he was thrown off the vehicle and lost consciousness at the scene.

The patient was brought to the Emergency Department of PMCH in a critical condition. He had sustained a deep and life-threatening neck injury that had severely damaged his airway. In addition, he suffered a fracture of the cervical spine (C5-C6), a completely collapsed left lung, and pneumomediastinum (air accumulation in the space between the lungs), making breathing nearly impossible.

Without wasting any time, doctors performed emergency surgery to repair the deep neck wound, stabilize the airway injury, and secure the patient’s breathing passage. He was then shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further management.

A chest tube was inserted to re-expand the collapsed lung, but despite the procedure, the lung failed to fully inflate and the patient's oxygen levels continued to decline, making the situation increasingly critical.

Recognizing the severity of the condition, Interventional Pulmonologist Dr. Aamir Shaukat immediately decided to perform a bronchoscopy. The examination revealed not only an injury to the airway but also a large mucus plug that had completely blocked the left main bronchus, preventing air from reaching the lung.

Using advanced interventional pulmonology techniques, Dr. Shaukat stabilized the airway and successfully removed the obstructing mucus plug. As soon as the blockage was cleared, the patient’s left lung rapidly re-expanded and his breathing began to improve significantly.

Pneumomediastinum posed another serious threat to the patient’s survival. If left untreated, it could have placed dangerous pressure on the heart and lungs, potentially proving fatal. However, the ICU team maintained round-the-clock monitoring and provided meticulous critical care. With appropriate medications, oxygen support, and continuous intensive care management, the life-threatening condition gradually resolved completely.

The patient has now made a full recovery and has been discharged from the hospital.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Aamir Shaukat said, “This case highlights the importance of modern medical science, prompt decision-making, advanced bronchoscopy techniques, and effective teamwork. Timely intervention played a crucial role in saving the patient’s life. He has recovered completely and has been discharged in good health.”

Mr. Rahul Agrawal, Chairman of PMCH, congratulated the medical team on the successful outcome. He stated, “This remarkable recovery reflects the hospital’s strong teamwork, state-of-the-art medical infrastructure, and the unwavering dedication of our healthcare professionals. Our institution remains committed to providing high-quality and life-saving healthcare services to every citizen.”

The successful management of this highly complex trauma case stands as a testament to PMCH’s expertise in emergency medicine, critical care, and advanced pulmonary interventions, reaffirming its commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services in the region.
