Diagnosed in the Womb, 5-Day-Old Baby Wins the Battle for Life

First-Ever Laparoscopic Surgery on a 2.7 kg Newborn Successfully Performed in Southern Rajasthan at PMCH

Udaipur: For any mother, few moments are more distressing than learning that her unborn child is suffering from a serious medical condition. Just five days before delivery, a 30-year-old woman from Rajsamand was informed that the baby she was carrying had a large abdominal cyst. What should have been a time of joy quickly turned into anxiety for the family.

However, thanks to the expertise of doctors and the advances of modern medical science, a remarkable medical milestone was achieved at Pacific Medical College & Hospital (PMCH), Udaipur. For the first time in Southern Rajasthan, a successful laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery was performed on a newborn just five days old. The surgical team removed a 110 cc ovarian cyst from the abdomen of the 2.7-kilogram baby girl, giving her a new lease on life.

The successful procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising Pediatric and Neonatal Surgeons Dr. Praveen Jhanwar and Dr. Urjita Patel, along with anesthesiologists Dr. Vijay Chahar, Dr. Krishna Gopal, Dr. Prakriti, Dr. Puneet Jain, Dr. Sunny Malviya, and support staff members Phoolshankar, Shobhana, and Vivek.

For the Rajsamand-based family, the nine-month wait was almost over, and preparations were underway to welcome the newborn. During a routine ultrasound examination conducted just five days before delivery, doctors detected a large mass in the baby’s abdomen. The family was reassured that the condition could be treated successfully through surgery after birth.

Following the baby’s delivery, detailed investigations confirmed the presence of an ovarian cyst. Performing laparoscopic surgery on a newborn, especially one weighing only 2.7 kilograms, is highly complex and risky. It requires miniature surgical instruments, exceptional technical precision, and seamless coordination with the anesthesia team. Even a minor error could have posed a serious threat to the infant’s life.

Dr. Praveen Jhanwar explained that operating inside the tiny abdominal cavity of a newborn presents significant challenges. Reaching the cyst and removing it safely through minimally invasive techniques required extreme care and expertise. During the one to one-and-a-half-hour-long surgery, doctors made a tiny incision and successfully removed the ovarian cyst using laparoscopic instruments without causing any damage to surrounding organs.

The operation was completed successfully due to the team’s skill and PMCH’s advanced medical infrastructure. The baby is now healthy, safe, and recovering well.

Dr. Jhanwar emphasized that this case highlights the critical importance of regular antenatal check-ups and timely ultrasound examinations during pregnancy. Had the cyst not been detected before birth, the baby’s life could have been at serious risk after delivery.

PMCH Chairman Rahul Agrawal stated that this successful surgery not only saved the life of the infant but also marked a significant milestone in the healthcare sector of Southern Rajasthan. He added that PMCH is equipped with world-class medical infrastructure and a highly skilled team of specialists capable of performing even the most complex and challenging procedures successfully.
