New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and accelerating economic development in Jammu & Kashmir, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to review ongoing and upcoming railway infrastructure projects in the Union Territory.
During the high-level meeting, a landmark decision was taken to introduce a commercial halt at Anantnag for the prestigious Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. The new stoppage is expected to provide substantial benefits to daily commuters, tourists, traders, and local residents by offering faster, more reliable, and convenient access to one of Kashmir's key economic and cultural centres.
The decision is being viewed as a major step toward enhancing mobility and integrating the region more closely with India's rapidly modernizing railway network.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for the transformative role being played by Indian Railways in Jammu & Kashmir. He noted that the Vande Bharat service has significantly improved travel between Jammu and Srinagar by reducing travel time and providing world-class comfort and amenities to passengers.
According to Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, discussions during the meeting also focused on the growing contribution of the railway network to the region's economy. Beyond passenger transportation, the expanding rail infrastructure has emerged as a critical logistics lifeline for Jammu & Kashmir.
The seamless movement of essential commodities and locally produced goods—including the region's renowned cherries, apples, and cement—has streamlined supply chains, reduced transportation costs, and opened wider markets for farmers, horticulturists, and industrial stakeholders.
Speaking on the occasion, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reiterated the Government of India's commitment to the holistic development of Jammu & Kashmir. He emphasized that the decision to provide a commercial halt at Anantnag reflects the government's people-centric approach and its resolve to align infrastructure development with local aspirations and regional needs.
The new Vande Bharat stoppage is expected to further boost tourism, trade, and economic activity in South Kashmir while enhancing the convenience of rail travel for thousands of passengers across the region.
The initiative underscores Indian Railways' continuing efforts to strengthen connectivity, promote inclusive growth, and support the socio-economic transformation of Jammu & Kashmir through modern transportation infrastructure.
