Sensational Mahant Devanand Murder Case Solved:
Two Arrested Including Lawyer-Mastermind, Woman Detained; Police Team Cracks 1,100-Year-Old Monastery Murder Mystery

Abbasi Kota, June: Kota City Police has cracked the sensational murder case of Mahant Devanand of the historic Chandresal Math, arresting two accused, including the alleged mastermind, while detaining a woman for allegedly attempting to destroy evidence. The case, linked to an approximately 1,100-year-old monastery, was considered one of the most challenging blind murder investigations in recent years.
Superintendent of Police Tejaswini Gautam said that Mahant Devanand was brutally murdered with sharp-edged weapons on the night of June 5 at the Chandresal Math located in the Borkheda police station area. Given the seriousness of the crime, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Subhash Chandra Mishra was constituted. Nearly 100 police personnel, supported by the Cyber Cell, District Special Team (DST), Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), and Dog Squad, worked on the investigation.
According to the police investigation, the motive behind the murder was a long-standing dispute over approximately 750 bighas of land and assets worth crores of rupees belonging to the monastery. Police alleged that Santosh Kumar Rai, the purported president of a rival faction and a practicing lawyer, conspired to eliminate the Mahant by hiring contract killers. Investigators claim that Rai paid ₹100,000 to a youth identified as Aditya Verma to execute the murder.
Police further alleged that on June 1, Rai took Aditya Verma to the monastery, familiarized him with the premises, briefed him on the Mahant’s daily routine, and finalized the murder plan. To avoid suspicion, Rai reportedly got himself admitted to a Jaipur hospital on June 2 under the pretext of undergoing leg surgery.
On the night of June 5, Aditya Verma, accompanied by Ankit Bairwa, Pushpendra Singh alias Prince, and another associate, allegedly arrived at the monastery on two motorcycles. The attackers first locked the room of Nandanvan Maharaj from the outside before entering Mahant Devanand’s room and launching a knife attack. When the Mahant attempted to flee, the assailants allegedly chased him down and repeatedly stabbed him, resulting in his death.
Based on technical evidence, CCTV footage, mobile phone location analysis, intelligence inputs, and extensive interrogation, police arrested the alleged mastermind Santosh Kumar Rai and co-accused Pushpendra Singh alias Prince. A woman has also been detained on allegations of destroying evidence related to the case. Efforts are continuing to apprehend the remaining absconding suspects.
Coordinated Police Effort Leads to Breakthrough
The successful investigation was carried out by a multi-disciplinary team comprising Additional Superintendents of Police Subhash Chandra Mishra and Mukesh Sankhla, Circle Officers Rudra Prakash Sharma, Manish Sharma, and Yogesh Sharma, along with Station House Officers and other senior investigators.
The Cyber Cell played a crucial role in identifying and tracing the accused. Head Constable Indra Singh and Constables Suresh Kumar, Ashok Singh, Laxman Singh, and Sunil Chandel made significant contributions, particularly in technical surveillance and suspect tracking.
Members of the District Special Team (DST), including Ramveer Singh, Surendra Singh, Bahadur Singh, Krishnagopal, Rohitash, Chhatrasal, Pradeep, Shaukat, Parmeshwar, and Jaiveer, actively participated in field operations. The CCTV analysis team, consisting of Suresh and Ajit, helped secure vital electronic evidence. Additional support came from AGTF officer Pratap Singh and several other personnel who contributed to the successful resolution of the case.
The Chandresal Math is regarded as a major center of religious faith, and the murder of its Mahant had sent shockwaves across the region. Police officials have indicated that further revelations are expected as the investigation continues and efforts intensify to arrest the remaining accused.
The successful breakthrough has once again demonstrated how modern technology, strategic planning, and coordinated teamwork can help law enforcement solve even the most complex and sensitive criminal cases.
