Rescue Alone Is Not Enough; Greater Focus Needed on Rehabilitation of Child Labourers: Chaudhary

Udaipur: Child labour is not only a serious social evil but also a stain on society. Sustained and collective efforts are necessary to eradicate it from its roots. Along with rescuing child labourers, equal attention must be given to their rehabilitation and long-term welfare.

These views were expressed by Rahul Chaudhary, newly appointed Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Udaipur, while addressing a workshop organized on the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour at the auditorium of Gayatri Seva Sansthan, Hiran Magri Sector-6, Udaipur.

As the chief guest, Chaudhary emphasized that one of the major challenges in Udaipur is the absence of a dedicated shelter home for rescued children, making their temporary rehabilitation difficult. He stressed the need to address this issue and stated that even if society succeeds in transforming the life of a single child, such efforts would be meaningful and worthwhile.

He further announced that a special month-long campaign against child labour would be conducted throughout June 2026 in collaboration with the police department and social organizations.

On the occasion, child rights expert and Director of Gayatri Seva Sansthan, Dr. Shailendra Pandya, highlighted the significance of World Day Against Child Labour and expressed the organization’s commitment to making “Child Labour-Free Udaipur” a reality by June 12, 2027, with active public participation.

Dr. Pandya pointed out that the Udaipur division has often served as a source region from where children are trafficked for labour. He emphasized the need to focus on the demand side of child labour by identifying and addressing the sectors and individuals generating demand for child workers. He also called for strict action against traffickers and those involved in child exploitation.

Sharing the organization’s achievements, Dr. Pandya informed that, with the support of the District Administration and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), Gayatri Seva Sansthan had rescued 152 child labourers during the past year and facilitated the registration of more than 50 police FIRs against offenders. As an innovative initiative this year, establishments found to be free of child labour will be publicly recognized and honored.

Addressing the gathering as a special guest, Chandragupt Singh Chauhan, Chairman of the Rajasthan Child Advisory Group (R-CAG) and noted social activist, stressed the need to formulate a comprehensive action plan and present it before the government. He advocated for the reopening of closed child care institutions across the district to ensure better rehabilitation and support for rescued children, enabling them to rebuild their lives and move in a positive direction.

Dayalal Chauhan, In-charge of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Police Department, informed participants about the state-wide special campaign “Umang VII”, aimed at preventing child labour. The campaign is being conducted from June 1 to June 30, 2026 across Rajasthan.

In his concluding remarks, educationist and former President of Gayatri Seva Sansthan, Dr. Sharad Chand Purohit, thanked all participants and emphasized that education remains the most effective tool for rehabilitating rescued children. He stated that continuous follow-up and integration into the education system are essential to prevent children from returning to child labour and to help them build a secure future.

During the event, the dignitaries formally released the poster of the special campaign “Umang VII.”

Members of the Rajasthan Child Advisory Group, including Dr. Rajshree Gandhi, Dr. Rajkumari Bhargava, Archana Singh, and Pradeep Ravani, also shared their views. The workshop was attended by representatives of various voluntary organizations, members of R-CAG, officials from the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, and representatives of departments working for child welfare.

The program was coordinated and conducted by Nitin Paliwal, Program Coordinator of Gayatri Seva Sansthan.
