New Driving Licence System Becomes a Challenge; 80% Applicants Failing the Test

By K.D. Abbasi

Kota: The automated driving test tracks introduced across Rajasthan to make the driving licence issuance process more transparent and technologically advanced are proving to be a major challenge for applicants. Equipped with sensors and cameras, the new system is reportedly resulting in nearly 80 percent of applicants failing the driving test, leading to a steady decline in the number of new licence applications.

The automated driving test tracks established by the Transport Department are being operated through a private agency. Advanced sensors, cameras, and software installed on the tracks assess an applicant’s driving skills and vehicle handling. The entire process is largely free from human intervention, ensuring that even minor errors are instantly recorded by the system.

Minor Mistakes Lead to Immediate Failure

On the automated track, any deviation from the designated lane, touching track boundaries, losing balance, or violating prescribed rules results in immediate failure. While many applicants previously managed to pass the test with basic practice, the sensor-based evaluation system leaves little room for error, making the test significantly more demanding.

Different Challenges for Two-Wheeler and Four-Wheeler Drivers

Two-wheeler applicants are required to navigate a figure-eight track without placing their feet on the ground, a task that many find difficult. Car drivers, on the other hand, face challenges in reverse parking, negotiating the H-track, handling slopes, and maintaining vehicle control within designated limits.

According to available data, car drivers are recording the highest failure rates, while the number of unsuccessful two-wheeler applicants is comparatively lower.

Introduced to Improve Road Safety

Officials from the Transport Department maintain that the primary objective of the new system is to ensure that only competent and skilled drivers are granted driving licences. The technology-driven testing process has been implemented to enhance road safety, reduce accidents, and promote responsible driving standards.

Growing Concerns Among Applicants

The rising failure rate has become a source of concern for young applicants and vehicle owners seeking licences. Many candidates argue that insufficient opportunities for practice on the automated tracks, combined with the strict sensor-based evaluation system, have made obtaining a driving licence far more difficult than before.

Experts believe that while the new system is a positive step toward improving road safety, it is equally important to provide adequate training and practice facilities to applicants so that genuinely capable drivers do not fail unnecessarily.
