World Sickle Cell Day 2026: Renewing the Commitment Towards a ‘Sickle Cell-Free India’

Udaipur: On the occasion of World Sickle Cell Day, a grand awareness and educational programme was organized on Friday by Ravindranath Tagore Medical College and Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital. The primary objective of the event was to promote equitable access to quality healthcare for patients in line with this year’s global theme, “Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Care.”

The programme was graced by Babulal Kharadi, Cabinet Minister for Tribal Area Development and Home Guards, Government of Rajasthan, as the Chief Guest. Divisional Commissioner Pragya Kevalramani and Dr. Rahul Jain, Principal and Controller of Ravindranath Tagore Medical College, attended as Special Guests. The event was chaired by Dr. R. L. Suman, Superintendent of Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital and Nodal Officer of the Centre of Competence for Sickle Cell Disease.

Remarkable Achievements of the Centre

During the programme, the Centre of Competence for Sickle Cell Disease highlighted its significant achievements in the fight against sickle cell disease.

The Centre has screened more than 32,000 newborns, successfully identifying 621 positive cases at an early stage. It has also screened 8,500 pregnant women, of whom 500 were identified as carriers of the disease.

In addition, to strengthen disease management and healthcare delivery, the Centre has provided specialized technical training to 1,107 healthcare professionals.

Commitment to Accessible and Equitable Care

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Rahul Jain, Principal and Controller of Ravindranath Tagore Medical College, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing free, cashless, and advanced medical treatment to every patient without discrimination.

He emphasized that achieving the goals of the Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission 2047 ahead of schedule remains a key priority for the institution.

Comprehensive Care Under One Roof

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. R. L. Suman, Superintendent of Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital, stated that the hospital has established comprehensive facilities for patients, including OPD and IPD services, advanced diagnostic investigations, and specialist consultations, all available under one roof.

A seminar organized as part of the event focused on increasing awareness among patients and their families regarding the prevention, management, and long-term care of sickle cell disease. Special emphasis was placed on empowering affected individuals with knowledge and support to improve their quality of life.

The programme concluded with a collective reaffirmation of the commitment to achieving the vision of a “Sickle Cell-Free India” through awareness, early diagnosis, quality healthcare, and community participation.
