Successful Surgery for Rare Pheochromocytoma Restores Child’s Health After Blood Pressure Soared to 200

25-Day Battle Between Life and Death Ends in Miracle: PMCH Doctors Save Seven-Year-Old with Rare Tumour

Udaipur: What began as a normal childhood suddenly turned into a desperate fight for survival for a seven-year-old boy whose blood pressure dangerously spiked to 200 mmHg—a life-threatening level that could have resulted in a heart attack or brain hemorrhage at any moment. After spending 25 days in hospitals without a definitive diagnosis, the child was finally brought to PMCH, where doctors identified the rare condition and successfully performed a complex surgery that saved his life.

According to the family, the child had been completely healthy until he suddenly began experiencing severe episodes of anxiety and profuse sweating. A visit to a local physician revealed an alarmingly high blood pressure reading of 200 mmHg, an extremely rare and critical condition for a child of his age. In search of specialized treatment, his parents admitted him to a hospital in another city, where he remained under treatment for nearly 25 days. Despite extensive investigations, his condition failed to improve and the underlying cause remained undiagnosed.

With hope fading, the family brought the child to PMCH, where he was evaluated by Dr. Praveen Jhanwar, Consultant Pediatric and Neonatal Surgeon. Following a thorough clinical assessment and advanced investigations, the medical team diagnosed the child with pheochromocytoma, an exceptionally rare adrenal gland tumour.

Explaining the condition, Dr. Jhanwar said that pheochromocytoma is a rare tumour that develops in the adrenal gland, located just above the kidneys. The tumour causes excessive secretion of adrenaline, leading to sudden and dangerously high blood pressure. He noted that the condition is extremely uncommon in children, occurring in only a very small number of cases worldwide.

The surgery posed a significant challenge because even the slightest manipulation of the tumour could cause the patient's blood pressure to fluctuate dramatically—either rising to life-threatening levels or dropping dangerously low. Such instability can prove fatal without meticulous planning and coordination.

Despite the risks, the multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Praveen Jhanwar, along with Dr. Urjita Modi, Dr. Nishant, and Dr. Suhani, successfully removed the tumour after careful pre-operative preparation and close coordination with the anesthesia team. The anesthesia specialists, including Dr. Shalini and Dr. Shahid, played a crucial role in maintaining the child's hemodynamic stability throughout the highly complex procedure.

The successful treatment was further supported by the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) team comprising Dr. Puneet Jain, Dr. Sunny Malviya, Dr. Dhara, Dr. Riya, and Dr. Haq, along with nursing and support staff Subhash Sharma, Shobhana, Vivek, and Manish, whose collective efforts ensured the child's safe recovery.

Expressing his appreciation for the medical team's achievement, PMCH Chairman Rahul Agrawal said that the hospital remains committed to providing world-class healthcare with advanced medical facilities. He added that the successful treatment once again demonstrates that even highly complex and rare medical conditions can now be effectively managed in Udaipur by experienced specialists.

The child has made a complete recovery. His blood pressure has returned to normal, and he has been discharged from the hospital in good health. For his family, seeing him return home healthy and smiling marked the end of an emotional 25-day ordeal—and for the doctors at PMCH, it was the greatest reward for their dedication and expertise.
