Udaipur, The Management Committee of the Muslim Sindhiyan Cemetery (Maqbara Masjid) at Surajpol has submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, seeking an impartial investigation into alleged encroachments on Waqf property and demanding appropriate action against those found responsible.
According to the committee, the historic city wall (Parikota) surrounding the Sindhiyan Cemetery was demolished several years ago during the construction of hotels and commercial establishments. The committee has alleged that portions of the cemetery's land, ranging from approximately 2.5 feet to 10–15 feet, were encroached upon and permanent structures were constructed without obtaining the necessary legal approvals.
In its memorandum, the committee has requested that the administration disclose whether any approvals for such constructions were granted by the Municipal Corporation (formerly the Municipal Council) or the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT)/Urban Development Authority (UDA). If no such permissions exist, the committee has urged the authorities to initiate legal proceedings against the concerned hotel and shop owners and remove the alleged encroachments from the Waqf property.
The committee further stated that during the erstwhile Mewar State, the Sindhiyan Cemetery reportedly covered nearly 100 bighas of land, whereas a significant portion of it has now disappeared. It has requested the district administration to conduct a comprehensive verification of the property's original extent using historical records, copper-plate grants, and revenue documents to establish the factual position. If any illegal occupation is identified, the committee has sought its removal and the restoration and protection of the Waqf property.
Shoaib Sindhi, Secretary of the Management Committee, stated in the memorandum that the Waqf property is a trust belonging to the entire Muslim community and that safeguarding it is the responsibility of the administration and the concerned departments. He called for a fair and transparent inquiry into the matter and strict legal action against anyone found guilty.
