Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria Inspects Dewas Phase III Drinking Water Project
Reviews Under-Construction Tunnel and Dam Works, Plants Tree at Tunnel Site
Udaipur: Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday visited the under-construction Dewas Phase III and Phase IV Drinking Water Projects, which are being developed to meet the long-term drinking water requirements of Udaipur city. During the visit, he conducted a detailed inspection of the ongoing tunnel and dam construction works. He was accorded a warm welcome by officials of the Water Resources Department.
The Governor first visited the Tunnel-III construction site at Undithal, where he reviewed the progress of tunnel excavation, construction techniques, safety measures, and quality standards. Officials of the Water Resources Department and representatives of the executing agency briefed him on the current status of the project, its technical features, and the planned schedule for completion. He later inspected the under-construction Dewas Phase III Dam at Naal, where he reviewed various construction activities and gained insights into the project's engineering aspects.
During the visit, Governor Kataria planted a sapling at the tunnel site, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable development. He remarked that water conservation and environmental protection are complementary objectives, and that preserving nature must remain an integral part of developmental activities.
Officials also briefed the Governor on the project's key technical specifications. They informed him that the Dewas Phase III Dam will have a water storage capacity of 703 MCFT, while the Dewas Phase IV Dam will store 390 MCFT. Together, the two projects are expected to supply 1,000 MCFT of drinking water annually. The project includes the construction of a 14.65-kilometre tunnel network, comprising a 4.15-km tunnel between Dewas Phase IV and Phase III, and a 10.50-km tunnel between Dewas Phase III and Phase II. With an estimated cost of approximately ₹1,690.55 crore, the project represents a major step toward ensuring Udaipur's long-term drinking water security.
Governor Kataria also reviewed the rehabilitation and resettlement plan for families affected by the project. Departmental officials briefed him on the infrastructure being developed at the proposed resettlement sites, including residential plots, roads, drinking water supply, electricity, and other essential civic amenities. He directed officials to ensure that rehabilitation and resettlement are carried out with sensitivity, transparency, and in accordance with prescribed standards within the stipulated timeframe.
Describing the project as vital for Udaipur's future water security, the Governor said that once completed, it would ensure a reliable supply of clean and adequate drinking water to the city for many years. He also noted that the project would play a significant role in maintaining water levels in Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake, thereby contributing to environmental conservation, tourism promotion, and the city's overall development. He instructed the department and the executing agency to complete the project while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and timely execution.
The inspection was attended by Gogunda MLA Pratap Gameti, Udaipur City MLA Tarachand Jain, social worker Pushkar Teli, and other public representatives. Senior officials from the Water Resources Department, including Additional Chief Engineer Virendra Sagar, Superintending Engineer Manoj Jain, and Executive Engineer Birbal Dudi, were also present, along with district administration officials and representatives of the construction agency.
Appreciating the coordinated efforts of the Water Resources Department, the district administration, and the executing agency, Governor Kataria expressed confidence that the ambitious project would not only ensure Udaipur's long-term water security but also strengthen environmental conservation, support the preservation of its lakes, and lay the foundation for the region's sustainable future development.
