Preserving Heritage Alongside Development is Essential

Udaipur: Vidyabhawan Gandhi Shiksha Adhyayan Sansthan, Ramgiri, Badgaon, Udaipur, organized a panel discussion on “Environmental Conservation: Balancing Development and Heritage” to commemorate the birth anniversary of Padma Bhushan Late Jagat Singh Mehta.

The keynote speaker, Dr. P.C. Jain (MBBS, Waterman), highlighted water conservation as one of today’s most urgent priorities. Drawing on his 26 years of experience, he emphasized rainwater harvesting, protection of traditional water sources, and community participation as practical solutions to the water crisis. Encouraging youth involvement, he introduced the slogan, “Save the Heritage of Wells and Stepwells, Secure the Future of Groundwater,” and appointed six students as Water Monitors.

Mr. Nand Kishore Sharma, former Secretary of Seva Mandir and Mohan Singh Mehta Memorial Trust, paid tribute to Jagat Singh Mehta’s vision, stressing that development must remain sensitive to nature and society. Mr. Shailendra Tiwari, President of the Trust, advocated sustainable and inclusive development over unchecked growth. Mr. Gyan Prakash Soni, water, environment, and land management expert from IIT Roorkee, shared practical insights on conserving natural resources while safeguarding cultural heritage.

The programme was chaired by Dr. Bhagwati Ahir, Principal of the institute. It was coordinated by Dr. Tara Kumawat and co-coordinated by Dr. Sarita Jain. Concluding the event, Dr. Priyanka Jain emphasized that meaningful development must go hand in hand with the conservation of nature, water, the environment, and cultural heritage. Faculty members, research scholars, and students participated enthusiastically.
