###Helmet Day programme promotes road safety through street plays, Good Samaritan honours
Udaipur, Road safety awareness took centre stage in Udaipur on the occasion of Helmet Day, with more than 700 students participating in a large-scale awareness programme featuring street plays that highlighted the importance of wearing helmets, following traffic rules and avoiding risky driving practices. The programme also honoured "Good Samaritans" (Raahveers) who helped save the lives of road accident victims.
NCC cadets from Guru Nanak Public School and students from several other educational institutions staged a series of short performances depicting the consequences of speeding, riding without helmets, drunk driving, creating social media reels while driving and overloading vehicles. The performances stressed that responsible road behaviour can prevent avoidable fatalities and injuries.
Several citizens who had assisted road accident victims by ensuring timely medical care were felicitated under the government's Raahveer initiative. Among those honoured were Kanhaiya Lal Khatik, Dharmendra Kumar Solanki, Kalu Singh, Lalit Swami, Monica, Bhagwati Minaria, Dr. Shashi Sharma, Ranveer Singh Ranawat, Ramesh Acharya, Pushkar Acharya, Sanjay Tailor, Laxman Lohar, Mohsina and Babulal, among others.
Addressing the gathering, speakers noted that nearly 1.5 lakh people lose their lives in road accidents in India every year. They urged the public to assist accident victims instead of recording videos at accident sites, pointing out that under the Supreme Court's Good Samaritan guidelines, individuals who transport injured persons to hospitals are protected from unnecessary legal or police procedures.
The programme also highlighted the need to inculcate road safety habits among children from an early age so that adherence to traffic rules becomes a lifelong practice. Organisers said the enthusiastic participation of over 700 students reflected the growing commitment of educational institutions towards promoting responsible road behaviour among the younger generation.
Kalpesh Chand, Head of Marketing, Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), said road safety was a shared social responsibility and not merely an individual obligation. He urged motorists to wear helmets and seat belts consistently, observing that a road accident affects not only the victim but also the victim's family and the wider community. He added that awareness programmes in schools play an important role in building a culture of safe road use among young people.
The event was organised with the participation of the Transport Department, Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital, private schools, teachers, social workers and members of the public. The organisers said the initiative, attended by more than 700 students, aimed to encourage safer road behaviour and motivate citizens to extend timely assistance to accident victims.
