India's Hydrogen Train Emits Only Water Vapour, Saves Over 3,200 Litres of Diesel

 

Jaipur, India has marked a major milestone in sustainable rail transportation with the successful operation of its first hydrogen-powered train, which was flagged off on July 17, 2026, on the Jind–Sonipat rail section in the Delhi region. Since its launch, the train has completed more than 1,200 kilometres of successful operations, saving over 3,200 litres of diesel.

Powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology, the train generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The electricity produced powers the train, while the only by-product is water vapour, eliminating smoke and tailpipe carbon emissions. This makes it one of the cleanest rail propulsion technologies currently available.

The project has been developed entirely under the leadership of Indian Railways as an indigenous initiative. The 10-coach train is equipped with two hydrogen-powered driving power cars, jointly producing 2,400 kW of power. It also features Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries and high-pressure hydrogen cylinders to ensure reliable and efficient operation.

As part of the project, Indian Railways has established its first dedicated hydrogen storage facility at Jind. The facility stores green hydrogen at pressures of up to 500 bar and provides refuelling at 350 bar, with a total storage capacity of approximately 3,000 kilograms.

The train incorporates multiple independent safety systems capable of automatically detecting hydrogen leaks, overheating, fire, and smoke. It is also equipped with automatic shut-off mechanisms, continuous ventilation systems, and complies with international safety standards. All mandatory testing and validation procedures have been successfully completed.

Following the successful operations on the Jind–Sonipat section, Indian Railways plans to begin trials of the hydrogen train on the Delhi route in the near future.

The hydrogen fuel cell train represents more than a technological achievement. It marks a significant step towards establishing a self-reliant hydrogen rail ecosystem in India and reinforces the country's commitment to sustainable, zero-emission rail transport. The project is expected to pave the way for wider deployment of hydrogen-powered trains and strengthen India's position as a global leader in clean transportation technologies.
