Geetanjali doctors save mother, newborn in high-risk delivery
Pregnant woman with acute liver failure caused by Hepatitis A undergoes successful normal delivery after emergency multidisciplinary care
UDAIPUR, India, Doctors at Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital successfully saved the lives of a pregnant woman suffering from acute liver failure and her newborn after providing emergency multidisciplinary treatment and conducting a successful normal delivery despite life-threatening complications.
Rani, 30, a resident of Dhariyawad, was brought unconscious to the hospital's emergency department at around 11 p.m. during the ninth month of her pregnancy. According to her family, she had been experiencing a high fever for two days and had developed symptoms of jaundice.
Dr. Neelam Toshniwal, consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology, immediately evaluated the patient and initiated emergency treatment. Given the severity of her condition, gastroenterologist and hepatologist Dr. Kartikeya Mathur was called for consultation.
The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit, where diagnostic tests confirmed acute liver failure and hepatic encephalopathy caused by Hepatitis A infection. Her pregnancy was also classified as high-risk, placing both the mother and the unborn child in critical danger.
Under Dr. Mathur's supervision, the patient received liver support therapy, life-saving medications and ventilator support. Throughout the night, Dr. Toshniwal, Dr. Sushil Gupta, associate professor in Neonatology, and a multidisciplinary team closely monitored both the mother and the fetus.
As the patient's condition remained critical, Dr. Toshniwal made the decision to proceed with delivery. Following hours of intensive treatment and continuous monitoring, the team successfully conducted a normal vaginal delivery at approximately 3 a.m. despite the patient's acute liver failure, unconscious state and complicated pregnancy.
The newborn was immediately placed under the care of Dr. Gupta and the neonatal team, while specialists in gastroenterology, hepatology and critical care continued treating the mother in the ICU.
The patient's condition improved significantly the following day. She was successfully weaned off ventilator support, and supplemental oxygen was discontinued within the next two to three days. Continued liver support therapy also resulted in steady improvement in her liver function.
After her condition stabilized, she was transferred from the ICU to the obstetrics ward and later reunited with her newborn. Following continued observation and treatment, both mother and baby made a full recovery and were discharged in stable condition.
Hospital officials said the case demonstrates the importance of advanced emergency care, rapid clinical decision-making and coordinated multidisciplinary treatment in managing complex medical emergencies involving both maternal and neonatal care.
