###Uttar Pradesh Pharmacy Association Calls for Dedicated Pharma University
PCI President Dr. Montu Patel emphasizes student welfare, research, and stronger industry-academia collaboration
Lucknow, The General Body Meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Pharmacy College and Pharma Industries Welfare Association was held on Thursday at Hotel Avadh International, Gate No. 3, New High Court, Lucknow. Representatives from pharmacy colleges and pharmaceutical industries across the state participated in the meeting through both physical and virtual modes. The meeting was chaired by Association President Prof. Amarika Singh.
The gathering was virtually addressed by Dr. Montu Patel, President of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). In his address, he emphasized that student welfare should remain the highest priority and stressed the need to expand both B.Pharm and M.Pharm programmes across the state. He stated that a decline in the number of institutions offering these programmes would adversely affect higher education, research, and the availability of qualified faculty members. He also pointed out that attracting teachers from other states to Uttar Pradesh is challenging, making it essential to develop a sufficient pool of qualified educators within the state.
A key resolution passed during the meeting urged the Government of Uttar Pradesh to establish a dedicated Pharma University in the state. The Association noted that Uttar Pradesh has nearly 2,700 pharmacy colleges and 1,100 pharmaceutical industries, creating a strong need for a specialized university to promote academic excellence, research, innovation, skill development, industry collaboration, and student placements. The Association announced that it would soon submit a formal proposal to the state government in this regard.
The meeting also resolved to strengthen collaboration between pharmacy colleges and pharmaceutical industries across Uttar Pradesh to provide students with industry-oriented training, internships, and enhanced employment opportunities.
Participants further agreed on the importance of regular training programmes for pharmacy faculty members. The Association decided to request the government to introduce an Apprenticeship Programme for pharmacy students in pharmaceutical industries, similar to the apprenticeship opportunities available for ITI and Polytechnic students, enabling them to gain valuable practical experience before entering the workforce.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Association Secretary Mr. Avadhesh Kumar Verma, followed by a welcome lunch hosted by the Association for all participants.
