Save Invisible Water: Students Selected as ‘Water Ambassadors’ to Promote Water Conservation
Udaipur: Water conservation is not limited to saving the water we can see. A significant amount of "invisible" or "virtual" water is consumed in the production of everyday items. For instance, manufacturing a single A4-sized sheet of paper requires nearly 10 litres of water, while producing 1 kilogram of chocolate consumes around 17,000 litres, 1 kilogram of rice about 5,000 litres, a sari approximately 5,000 litres, a pair of jeans about 7,500 litres, and a T-shirt around 2,200 litres of water.
Experts emphasize that wasting paper, food, or purchasing unnecessary clothing also means wasting the vast quantities of water used in producing them. Avoiding unnecessary consumption can therefore contribute significantly to water conservation.
Groundwater experts believe that awareness about water conservation should begin from the very first year of schooling. Keeping this objective in mind, senior water conservation advocate and former State Coordinator for Water Conservation and De-addiction at Bharat Vikas Parishad, Dr. P. C. Jain, launched an initiative to identify "Jal Jankars" (Water Ambassadors) among school students.
The programme was organized today at Maharana Public School, Sundarwas, where 10 students were selected as Water Ambassadors. Through educational videos and interactive sessions, they were introduced to topics such as water conservation songs and slogans, the impact of religious offerings on water bodies, groundwater crisis hotspots, rainwater harvesting techniques, and water-efficient daily practices.
These student ambassadors will share the knowledge gained with their classmates and encourage responsible water use within their schools. To ensure continuous learning and engagement, monthly online or offline meetings will be organized under the "Jal Prayas" (Water Initiative) programme.
The programme was conducted by Principal Asha Kanwar, while Director Sunita Soni expressed her gratitude to Dr. P. C. Jain for initiating the awareness campaign.
The students selected as Water Ambassadors (Jal Jankars) included Anushka, Bharti, Ishika, Manisha, Divya, Srishti, Sneha, Navya, Priyal, Niyati, Jasoda, and Hitesh.
