A Stage Tribute to Veer Savarkar at Shilpgram By Vilas Janve Cultural Activist, Theatre Critic & Arts Commentator Udaipur: The monthly Rangshala theatre series, organised by the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC), presented an evocative documentary drama, "Main Bhi Veer Savarkar – Ansh Matra" (I Too Am Veer Savarkar – A Fraction of His Spirit), at the Darpan Auditorium, Shilpgram. Conceived, written, directed and performed by Indore-based yoga practitioner and theatre artist Neelmadhav Vasant Bhusari, the production offered an emotionally compelling exploration of the life, ideals and sacrifices of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Presented as part of the August edition of Rangshala in the lead-up to India's Independence Day celebrations, the play was a fitting tribute to one of the country's most influential revolutionary thinkers. Through a blend of theatre, historical documentation and multimedia presentation, the production revisited Savarkar's extraordinary life and unwavering commitment to the nation. The performance opened with a memorable line attributed to Ganesh Damodar Savarkar during his incarceration in the Cellular Jail: "This is a sacred pilgrimage of supreme martyrs. Do not call it Kala Pani. Listen instead—the very soil here echoes with the saga of sacrifice." The powerful invocation immediately established the emotional and historical depth of the evening. Bhusari's extensive research was evident throughout the production. Drawing inspiration from Savarkar's celebrated Marathi poems Sagara Pran Talmalala and Jayostute, he seamlessly integrated live performance with rare archival photographs, historical documents and video clips projected on an LED screen. The result was a documentary drama that introduced audiences to several lesser-known dimensions of Savarkar's life. The narrative revisited important milestones, including Savarkar's years at India House in London, his association with Bhikaji Cama, Madan Lal Dhingra, Lokmanya Tilak, the inspirational legacy of Guru Gobind Singh, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Dr. K. B. Hedgewar. Dramatic recreations of Savarkar's daring escape attempt by leaping into the sea from a ship and the harrowing scenes from the Cellular Jail vividly portrayed the courage and resilience that defined his revolutionary journey. The production also shed light on the inhuman suffering endured by political prisoners in the Andaman Cellular Jail. Despite relentless torture and solitary confinement, Savarkar continued to create literature of enduring value, educated fellow inmates and inspired them with the spirit of patriotism. The presentation further highlighted his contribution to the evolution of administrative and educational terminology in modern India and reflected upon the restrictions imposed on both Savarkar and his family even after his release from prison. Neelmadhav Bhusari delivered a sincere and emotionally engaging performance that resonated with the audience. His commitment to the subject and authenticity of expression made the production impactful. While the presentation effectively conveyed its message, there remains scope for further refinement in voice modulation and stage coverage to enhance its theatrical intensity. Backstage management by Vikram Wadnere ensured a smooth and disciplined production. The audience responded with warm appreciation, acknowledging the honesty, dedication and conviction with which the documentary drama had been presented. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ashwin M. Dalvi, Director of the West Zone Cultural Centre, observed that the ideals and message of Veer Savarkar remain as relevant today as they were during India's freedom struggle. He described the production as a source of inspiration for young people and emphasised its significance in nurturing responsibility, patriotism and national consciousness. For Neelmadhav Bhusari, the production is not merely a theatrical performance but part of a larger national cultural mission. Through Main Bhi Veer Savarkar – Ansh Matra, he seeks to connect younger generations with the life, vision and sacrifices of one of India's most influential freedom fighters. This production deserves to reach audiences across the country, particularly the youth, whose energy and commitment will shape India's future.
