Life-Saving Emergency Vascular Surgery Saves Young Patient

Udaipur |A 20-year-old man from Chittorgarh, who suffered a life-threatening neck injury after being struck by the blade of a wood-cutting machine, has been successfully treated at Paras Health Udaipur through an emergency vascular surgery.

The accident completely severed the patient's left external jugular vein, causing massive blood loss and leaving him in critical condition. After receiving primary treatment at a nearby hospital in Chittorgarh, he was immediately referred to Paras Health, Shobhagpura, Udaipur, for advanced vascular care.

Upon arrival at the Emergency Department, the patient was in shock with unstable vital signs due to severe blood loss. Following rapid assessment, he was rushed to the operating theatre, where a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Santosh Gupta, Senior Consultant – Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, performed an emergency three-hour surgery to control the bleeding, repair the severed vein, and save his life.

During the complex procedure, the patient received two units of blood transfusion to compensate for the extensive blood loss. The surgery was particularly challenging because his critically low blood pressure made identification and control of the damaged blood vessel extremely difficult.

The successful outcome was made possible through the coordinated efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including Dr. Nitin Kaushik from the Department of Anaesthesia and Dr. Sumit Sehgal, Plastic Surgeon, who assisted during the surgery.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Santosh Gupta said the patient arrived in an extremely critical condition with severe neck trauma and unstable vital signs. He emphasized that immediate surgery and seamless coordination among multiple specialties were crucial, adding that even a delay of 30 to 60 minutes could have proved fatal.

Anubhav Sukhwani, Facility Director, Paras Health Udaipur, said the hospital remains committed to delivering advanced, multidisciplinary emergency care for critically injured patients. He noted that the case highlights the importance of rapid clinical decision-making, teamwork, and specialized vascular expertise in managing complex trauma emergencies.

Following the successful surgery and intensive post-operative care, the patient's condition has steadily improved. He is now stable and recovering well, with doctors expecting a full recovery within a month through regular follow-up and rehabilitation.

Doctors said the case underscores the importance of early referral, prompt emergency intervention, and specialized vascular surgery in managing severe neck injuries. Such injuries, commonly caused by road accidents, industrial mishaps, or sharp-object trauma, can result in massive blood loss within minutes, making immediate medical attention essential for survival.
