MLSU workshop highlights media and handloom heritage
‘The Loom, The Lens, The Legacy’ celebrates tradition through photography and fashion
Udaipur: On the occasion of National Handloom Day, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Department of Fashion Technology and Designing of Mohanlal Sukhadia University organized a one-day workshop and design show on the theme “The Loom, The Lens, The Legacy.” The event was held in collaboration with the Anthropological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
The first session focused on the role of media, the importance of cameras and lenses, and training related to visual communication. The evening session featured a fashion design show in which students presented traditional Indian attire through a ramp walk, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kailash Daga emphasized the harmony between the loom and the lens and underlined the importance of preserving India’s cultural heritage. Traditional handloom artisans from the Mewar and Marwar regions were also felicitated during the inaugural session.
Registrar Dr. Vriddhi Chand Garg stressed the need to introduce anthropology as a new academic discipline at the university. Former Rajasthan Administrative Service officer and photography award winner Dinesh Kothari shared his experiences and explained technical aspects of photography to students.
Head of the Journalism Department Dr. Kunjan Acharya said that a photograph can convey the meaning of a thousand words and discussed challenges such as AI-generated images and deepfakes in the era of social media. Head of the Fashion Technology Department Dr. Dolly Mogra emphasized the need to preserve handloom traditions amid changing fashion trends.
Dean of Arts Prof. Neeraj Sharma said that the fusion of tradition and innovation would be crucial for the future of fashion.
Deputy Director of the Western Regional Centre of the Anthropological Survey of India Dr. Neelanjan Khatua explained ongoing efforts to keep cultural heritage and traditional practices alive.
In the second session, a large crowd gathered to view an exhibition of handloom products. Traditional artisans shared their experiences, and Nandlal Salvi presented a model of the Salvi Weaver House, highlighting the lifestyle and living spaces of traditional weaving families.
The third session paid tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar’s contribution to handloom traditions, with dancer Shaili Shrivastava presenting a classical dance-drama performance.
The fashion show organized by the Fashion Technology Department showcased students’ creativity and conveyed the message that Indian handloom is not merely a museum legacy but also a strong foundation for contemporary fashion and design. The attempt to present traditional textiles in a modern style was widely appreciated by guests and spectators.
Special guests included Rajat Verma, Deputy Director of the Rajasthan Handicrafts Department; Abhik Sarkar, Programme Officer, CCRT Udaipur; Prof. Vijay Lakshmi Chauhan; Shweta Sharma; Dr. Gaurav Singhvi of INTACH; Ajay Choudhary of the Anthropological Survey of India; and Colonel Kumar of the Indian Army. They distributed certificates to the winners.
The programme was conducted by Annu Jain and Chhavi Vyas, while Dr. Neelanjan Khatua delivered the vote of thanks.
