Congress Slams Centre Over Mangarh Dham, Calls It an Insult to Tribal Sacrifice
UDAIPUR, On the eve of World Tribal Day and the anniversary of the Quit India Movement, Congress leaders launched a sharp attack on the central government over its refusal to declare Mangarh Dham a National Memorial, calling the decision “an insult to the history, sacrifice and self-respect of India’s tribal communities.”
Addressing a press conference at RTDC Kajri in Udaipur, former MP and Udaipur Rural Congress president Raghuveer Singh Meena and former district collector and Congress leader Tara Chand Meena accused the Centre of ignoring one of the most significant chapters of the tribal freedom struggle.
“Mangarh is not just a hill. It is a battlefield of tribal courage and martyrdom,” Raghuveer Singh Meena said. “Denying it national memorial status is denying recognition to thousands of tribal men and women who laid down their lives for dignity and freedom.”
Tara Chand Meena said the government was hiding behind technical provisions related to archaeological authenticity while overlooking the emotional and historical significance of the site. He recalled that on Nov. 17, 1913, tribal followers of Govind Guru gathered at Mangarh Hill, where British forces opened fire, killing a large number of people.
“Mangarh is the Jallianwala Bagh of the tribal community,” he said. “If the nation honors Jallianwala as a symbol of sacrifice, why is Mangarh being denied the same respect?”
The Congress leaders also questioned the Centre over reports that recommendations had been made in 2022 by the National Monuments Authority and the then Rajasthan government to grant national memorial status to Mangarh Dham.
They said the issue was not merely administrative but a test of whether tribal contributions to India’s freedom struggle would receive the place they deserve in national memory.
The leaders also announced large-scale programs in Udaipur on Aug. 9 to mark World Tribal Day and the Quit India Movement, including tribal cultural performances, patriotic events and public outreach campaigns focused on tribal rights, culture and heritage.
Several Congress office-bearers, including state general secretary and spokesperson Pankaj Kumar Sharma and city Congress president Fateh Singh Rathore, were present at the event.
