Lathi-Charge and Use of Water Cannons on Women During UGC Protest in Jaipur Unjustified: Bichhaweda
Udaipur. Kunwar Onar Singh Bichhaweda, Udaipur Rural District President of the Kshatriya Karni Sena, has expressed grief over the death of Devraj Singh during the UGC-related protest in Jaipur and questioned the police action against protesters.
Bichhaweda said that the use of lathi-charge and water cannons during a peaceful democratic protest was unjustified. He termed the use of water cannons against women a serious matter and said that such action should be viewed with concern.
He emphasized that every citizen has the democratic right to express their views peacefully and that the government should respect public sentiment. “Our patriotism and love for the nation should not be considered our weakness,” he said, adding that the government should listen to the protesters and establish dialogue through democratic means.
Bichhaweda referred to the protests at Jantar Mantar, saying that the country had witnessed incidents there where allegations of abusive language against the nation, damage to public property and physical altercations with police personnel had surfaced. He questioned whether a similar situation existed during the Jaipur protest. “If not, then why was there a need to use lathi-charge and water cannons against peaceful protesters?” he asked.
Bichhaweda also referred to the strong stand taken by Congress leader Pratap Singh Khachariyawas over the UGC controversy in Jaipur. He described Khachariyawas' position as a vocal and forceful raising of issues concerning society.
He further said that Independent MLA Ravindra Singh Bhati, Congress leaders Bhanwar Jitendra Singh and Dharmendra Singh Rathore have also questioned the use of lathi-charge and water cannons during the Karni Sena protest in Jaipur.
Bichhaweda added that senior BJP leader and former Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra has also raised objections to the new UGC guidelines and demanded their withdrawal.
He said that the UGC Rollback-2026 issue is now emerging not only as a social movement but also as a matter of wider political debate in Rajasthan.
