Nationwide Backlash Over Sukhadia University VC’s Controversial Statement

Udaipur, A statement by Prof. Sunita Mishra, Vice-Chancellor of Mohanlal Sukhadia University, describing Aurangzeb as the “best administrator” during a seminar has sparked nationwide outrage. The comment has drawn strong reactions from scholars, former vice-chancellors, social organizations, and students across India.

The controversy arose during the inaugural session of a seminar titled “Indian Knowledge Tradition: Roadmap to Developed India 2047” held at the Bappa Rawal Auditorium of Sukhadia University, where Prof. Mishra, while praising Akbar, described Aurangzeb as the “best administrator.” Historians and academics have condemned the remark as highly inappropriate and misleading.

Dr. Gayatri Swarnkar, female coordinator of Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, strongly criticized the statement, saying it is “unjustifiable, objectionable, and likely to create social unrest.” She added, “Historically, Aurangzeb imposed the jizya tax, destroyed temples, carried out atrocities, and ordered the execution of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He attacked Mathura and Vrindavan. Calling such a ruler the ‘best administrator’ is a neglect of history and misleads society.”

Several eminent scholars and former vice-chancellors have also opposed the statement. Among them are Prof. Badrilal Chaudhary (Former VC, Sukhadia University), Prof. M.L. Chhipa (Former VC, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University), Prof. M.L. Kalra (Former VC, Kota University), Prof. Bhagwati Prakash Sharma (Former VC, Gautam Buddha University), Prof. Umashankar Sharma (Former VC, Maharana Pratap Agricultural University), and Prof. B.R. Chhipa (Former VC, Swami Keshwanand Agricultural University, Bikaner).

Student organizations and social groups have demanded a public apology and clarification from the university administration. The Nyas has also urged authorities to ensure proper review and training to prevent such controversial statements in the future.

This episode highlights the urgent need for responsible academic conduct and cultural sensitivity. The Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas has called for strict action against the remark to preserve historical accuracy and safeguard social harmony.
