Successful Treatment of Heart Ventricular Septal Defect Without Open Heart Surgery at PIMS Hospital

In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at the Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital in Udaipur have successfully closed a ventricular septal defect (VSD) in the heart without resorting to open-heart surgery.

Chairman of PIMS, Ashish Agrawal, revealed that doctors at the hospital closed the heart ventricular septal defect of a patient without the need for incisions. The patient's treatment was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Dr. Mahesh Jain and his team performed a PDA device closure surgery to seal the congenital defect known as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).

Agrawal explained that typically, within a few months after birth, the main arteries in the heart naturally close. However, in some cases, this closure does not occur, leaving the passage open. This condition is commonly referred to as a hole in the heart, medically termed as PDA.

Dr. Mahesh Jain further elaborated that individuals affected by this condition often experience symptoms such as rapid breathing, breathlessness during climbing stairs, dizziness, and reduced physical development compared to their peers. The PDA device closure technique involves using a umbrella-shaped device with two discs and a tube-like structure in the middle. This device is inserted into the heart's defect through a catheter, effectively sealing the opening.

The surgical and procedural team included cardiologists Dr. Mahesh Jain, cardiac anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodiya, CTVS surgeon Dr. Vivek Ravat, and non-invasive cardiologist Dr. Umesh Swarnakar.
