UDAIPUR, India — More than 10,000 residents of Udaipur came together at Urban Square Mall to create a 300-foot-long, 15-foot-high Tricolor using their handprints, marking Independence Day with a unique display of patriotism and community unity.
The initiative was conceptualized and designed by Urban Sketchers under the leadership of renowned architect Sunil Ladha. The massive artwork featured three 100-foot panels in saffron, white and green. Instead of conventional paint, each section was created using actual handprints contributed by residents of Udaipur.
The campaign brought together a wide cross-section of the community, including the Udaipur Pink Women Army led by Dr. Archana Shaktawat, the BCI Tourism Group led by Shraddha Gattani and Mukesh Madhavani, Urban Sketchers, and students from St. Matthew School, Prayas, Miranda and Royal Academy. Riverfront Nav Ratan Community, Grace Crystal and other residents' welfare associations also participated, along with social groups such as Let Us Hop, mall visitors and the Urban Square Mall team.
Mewar's Legacy Finds Place in the Tricolor
The giant artwork also paid tribute to India's freedom struggle and the glorious heritage of Mewar. Images and representations of Maharana Pratap, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were incorporated into the installation.
The historical figures represented courage, sacrifice, unity and national pride, adding a strong cultural dimension to the community-created Tricolor.
Nandini Taneja, CEO of Bhumika Enterprises, said the response and participation from Udaipur residents had been overwhelming.
“The most special aspect of this Tricolor is that it has been created by the community itself,” Taneja said. “More than 10,000 people left their handprints, collectively shaping a symbol of unity and patriotism.”
Displayed at Urban Square Mall, the 300-foot Tricolor became a major attraction during the Independence Day celebrations. The initiative demonstrated how individual contributions, when brought together by an entire community, can create a powerful symbol of national pride.
