New Delhi/Gandhinagar, On the occasion of Rakshabandhan, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah celebrated Rakshabandhan with girls suffering from Type 1 diabetes in his parliamentary constituency, Gandhinagar. The girls tied a Rakhi to Amit Shah. On this occasion, Shah described the initiative to provide lifelong free insulin to children suffering from Type 1 diabetes as an example of the government's sensitive health policy. On this occasion, two doctor sisters, Dr. Smita Joshi and Dr. Shukla Ben, from Vishnagar, near Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hometown, Vadnagar, were also present, who have been working to raise awareness about childhood diabetes in India and abroad for the past several years. Union Home Minister Shah said on this occasion that children suffering from Type 1 diabetes require insulin throughout their lives, and its cost can place a significant financial burden on families. An integrated system combining screening, diagnosis, insulin/treatment, monitoring, and follow-up has been developed for children aged 0 to 18 years with type 1 diabetes in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency. *A new meaning of health security has been given to Raksha Bandhan* Amit Shah said that protecting the health of daughters is not only the responsibility of the family, but also of society and the government. According to him, just as Raksha Bandhan symbolizes protection and trust between brothers and sisters, this initiative's unique feature is the integration of this sentiment with health security. He linked this program to the principles of "service, sensitivity, and security" of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Shah said that only when daughters' health is secure, the future of the family and society will be secure. *New system launched at the national level as well* Shah explained that this initiative is not limited to Gandhinagar alone. The Union Health Ministry has issued comprehensive guidelines under the Rashtriya Bal Suraksha Karyakram (RBSK) 2.0 to integrate screening, diagnosis, and long-term treatment of diabetes in children into the public health system by 2026. It provides free long-term care for children up to 18 years of age through the government health system. The system developed in Gandhinagar is a local model for providing continuous insulin and treatment to children with type 1 diabetes within this comprehensive health infrastructure. Its importance is further enhanced because any irregularity in insulin can have serious health consequences for children. *Message of Health Security through the Rakhi Thread* This meeting between Amit Shah and the girls on Raksha Bandhan served as an initiative that linked the traditional festival of Raksha Bandhan with social concern. While the Rakhi thread strengthened the emotional bond, the free and continuous insulin initiative provided a practical extension of that bond through health security. This model will now be considered important because of the extent to which it is implemented in other areas after the experience in Gandhinagar. If implemented effectively on a wide scale, it could prove to be a major relief for children with type 1 diabetes and their families, both financially and health-wise.
