Udaipur: Doctors at Geetanjali Hospital have successfully performed a complex surgery on a patient suffering from chronic pancreatitis, removing more than 10 stones from the main pancreatic duct. The largest stone measured over 1.5 centimetres.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Hemant Jain, gastroenterology and pancreatic surgeon, and his team using a laparoscopic-assisted lateral pancreaticojejunostomy, also known as the Puestow procedure. The surgery was aimed at relieving the obstruction in the pancreatic duct and improving the flow of pancreatic secretions.
The patient had been suffering from chronic pancreatitis for a prolonged period. Persistent inflammation had led to the formation of stones in the main pancreatic duct, causing recurrent abdominal pain, digestive difficulties and weight loss. The disease had also affected the pancreas’s insulin-producing capacity, resulting in diabetes.
Following the surgery, the patient recovered well and was discharged from the hospital on the fourth day. The patient also experienced significant improvement in symptoms, according to the hospital.
Dr. Jain said pancreatic surgery is a challenging procedure that requires specialised surgical skills and an experienced medical team. He added that Geetanjali Hospital regularly provides advanced surgical treatment for pancreatic conditions.
He said surgery can be an effective treatment option for selected patients with long-standing pancreatic inflammation, stones obstructing the main duct and persistent pain, following an appropriate clinical evaluation. The procedure can help relieve ductal obstruction and provide long-term pain relief in suitable cases.
Dr. Jain urged people not to ignore recurring abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss or persistent digestive problems. He advised those experiencing such symptoms to seek timely consultation with a specialist to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
