Udaipur, For hundreds of young minds in Udaipur, Wednesday became a day of discovery as leading space scientists from across the country came face-to-face with students and opened a window into the rapidly expanding world of space science and technology. A grand programme to mark National Space Day 2026 was organised at the Vidya Bhawan Auditorium on Dewali Road under the joint aegis of Vidya Bhawan Society, Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Udaipur Solar Observatory, Regional Remote Sensing Centre, National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) and ISRO. Students from schools, technical institutions and research centres participated enthusiastically. Working models of spacecraft and space missions attracted students, including young children, who showed keen interest in understanding how spacecraft and space technologies work. Space is the new horizon for young India The programme went beyond highlighting India’s achievements in space. Its central message was that space is no longer an exclusive domain of scientists and astronauts but a growing field of opportunities for the younger generation. India’s space journey has evolved from its early satellite and lunar missions to advanced research in human spaceflight, Earth observation, solar science, artificial intelligence, robotics, remote sensing, startups and international space cooperation. The scientists told students that the next phase of India’s space programme would require not only scientists but also engineers, technicians, programmers, data specialists, designers, entrepreneurs and skilled professionals from diverse disciplines. Dr Anil Mehta’s vision strengthens the initiative Dr Anil Mehta, Principal of Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic, has played an important role in promoting a learning environment where technical education is linked with emerging areas of science and technology. His vision of exposing students to real-world applications and providing them access to leading experts gave special significance to the National Space Day programme. By bringing accomplished space scientists directly before students, the initiative created an opportunity for young learners to understand the possibilities of careers in the space sector beyond what they encounter in textbooks. Dr Mehta emphasised the importance of curiosity, practical learning, innovation and skill development in preparing students for the technologies of the future. His approach helped transform the celebration from a commemorative programme into a meaningful platform for inspiration, interaction and career awareness. ‘Space offers opportunities in several fields’ One of the most engaging sessions focused on career opportunities in space science and technology. Dr A.K. Bera, General Manager, RRS Centre, ISRO, Jodhpur, told students that a career in the space sector does not necessarily mean becoming a scientist. Engineering, electronics, computers, data science, remote sensing, communications, manufacturing and several other technical disciplines offer significant opportunities. Addressing students from diploma, ITI and B.Tech backgrounds, he said technical education could provide pathways not only to employment but also to entrepreneurship and startups. He encouraged students to develop their skills continuously, experiment with new ideas and strengthen their technical capabilities. His message was clear: dreaming about space is only the beginning; young people must develop the skills required to turn those dreams into reality. From Chandrayaan to Chandrayaan-4 Senior Scientist Engineer Nishant Jaiswal of SAC, ISRO, Ahmedabad, presented an overview of India’s space journey and highlighted the contribution of Dr Vikram Sarabhai to the country’s space programme. He discussed the NISAR mission, lunar exploration and Chandrayaan-4, giving students an insight into the scale of India’s future space ambitions. He also referred to India’s human spaceflight programme and Shubhanshu Shukla’s space mission, highlighting the country’s growing capabilities in human space exploration. Students were also informed about ISRO initiatives aimed at connecting young people with space science and technology. Understanding the Sun and space weather Prof Nandita Srivastava, Senior Professor, introduced students to the science of the Sun, solar activity and its magnetic field. Explaining complex concepts in simple language, she said solar activity has implications far beyond astronomy. It can influence Earth’s magnetic environment, satellites and communication systems. She also highlighted space weather as an emerging area of scientific research with growing importance for future space missions and technology. Students put scientists in the spotlight The question-and-answer session proved to be one of the most lively parts of the programme. Students asked scientists about lunar missions, satellites, the Sun, space research, technical education, careers at ISRO, space startups and India’s upcoming missions. The experts responded to the questions in a simple and engaging manner. The interaction provided students with an opportunity to discuss their aspirations directly with professionals working in the field. Prof Shibu K. Mathew, Head, Udaipur Solar Observatory, along with several scientists and experts associated with space science and research, attended the programme. Scientists from Udaipur Solar Observatory, Ramit Bhattacharya and Dr Bhuvan Joshi, conducted the proceedings. Students explore spacecraft models Students and teachers from Ryan International School, Delhi Public School, Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic, Vidya Bhawan Basic School and St Matthew’s School, among other institutions, participated in the programme. Research scholars also attended. Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic Academic Coordinator Chandresh Arora said such programmes were aimed not merely at informing students about India’s achievements in space but also at developing scientific temperament, encouraging questions and nurturing curiosity towards research. Focus on research and innovation Vidya Bhawan Society Finance Secretary Revati Raman Shrimali and Arrangement Secretary Shailendra Barhath welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of research, innovation and scientific thinking. They encouraged students to use their knowledge and talent for the larger interest of the nation. The programme was conducted by Darshana Sharma, Dr Sonu Heerawat and Nitin Sanadhya.
