Udaipur: Dhyanodaya Tirth (Shri Suprakash Mati Dhyan Kendra) at Balicha witnessed an atmosphere of devotion, austerity and spiritual discipline on Wednesday as devotees observed Chandan Shashti (Chandan Chhath), a sacred fasting observance in the Digambar Jain tradition.

Women devotees performed a special Chandan Abhishek and Shantidhara of the Jain deity, offering prayers and participating in religious rituals.

During a live discourse from Ahmedabad’s Meghani Nagar, Ganini Aryika 105 Shri Suprakash Mati Mataji explained the spiritual significance of Chandan Shashti, describing it as a practice that promotes self-purification, restraint, austerity and the cultivation of virtues.

She said sandalwood remains cool while spreading fragrance around it, and similarly, people should bring qualities such as forgiveness, peace, restraint and sacrifice into their lives.

Mataji explained that the fast, observed on the sixth day of the Krishna Paksha of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, is regarded as an important form of Jain austerity. Devotees observe fasting, one-meal restrictions or renunciation of certain foods according to their capacity. Chanting the Namokar Mantra, worshipping the Jinas and engaging in scriptural study are considered important practices during the observance.

Referring to the inspirational story of Ishwardutt Seth and Chandana Sethani, she said fasting is not merely about physical austerity but is intended to purify one’s thoughts, speech and actions.

Mamata Rajawat, Dimple Dagariya, Asha Bakliwal and Manju Patni were among the women who observed the fast.

The first Chandan Dhara at Dhyanodaya Tirth was performed by the Indu Godawat family. Devotees offered special prayers to Lord Shri 1008 Chandraprabhu and worshipped Ichhapurn Maa Jwala Malini, seeking peace, prosperity and well-being. Several devotees observed complete fasting by abstaining from both food and water.

According to Jain tradition, regular observance of Chandan Shashti strengthens the spirit of self-restraint and austerity. On completion of the vow, rituals and acts of charity such as temple construction, installation of Jain images, donation of scriptures and offering food to ascetics and those observing vows are considered significant.

Devotees participated enthusiastically in the programme and pledged to pursue self-purification, restraint, austerity and Jain devotion. Dhyanodaya Tirth Chairman Om Godawat congratulated the fasting women and appreciated their dedication and devotion.
