T###he Significance of Herbal Unani Medicine on April 25th, "World Malaria Day": Dr. Liyaqat Ali Mansury

This is a global health awareness initiative observed annually on April 25th as "World Malaria Day." Its objective is to raise awareness about this deadly mosquito-borne disease and to promote global action toward its control and eradication. This day highlights efforts to reduce malaria-related deaths and curb its spread; the disease is transmitted through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito and is caused by an infectious agent known as the Plasmodium parasite. It can lead to a severe—and at times, life-threatening—illness.

*Types of Malaria:* There are four main types: __P. falciparum, P. vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium malariae.

*Symptoms of Malaria Fever:* __The life cycle of Plasmodium parasites is complex, resulting in recurrent bouts of fever accompanied by chills. Symptoms may include liver dysfunction, loss of appetite, vomiting, and other ailments. Most patients recover quickly from malaria symptoms following treatment; however, if treatment is delayed, severe complications—such as severe malarial anemia, cerebral malaria, coma, or even death—may ensue.

*History of World Malaria Day:*__
"World Malaria Day" was first observed in Africa in 2008; it evolved from "Africa Malaria Day," an observance that African nations had been celebrating since 2001.

*Prevention of Malaria:* __The following measures can be helpful in reducing the risk of mosquito bites:
1. Apply an insect repellent containing 20–35% N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) to exposed skin.
2. When outdoors at night, wear long-sleeved clothing and long trousers.
3. Use a mosquito net over your bed while sleeping at night.  4. Before going to sleep, spray pyrethrin or a related insecticide in your bedroom.
5. Do not allow water to stagnate anywhere in the vicinity of your home.
6. Always keep water tubs covered with a lid.

Unani Medicine — This chronic form of malaria is referred to as "Bukhār-e-Daqiyān" in Unani medicine. Unani therapy is utilized in cases where a malarial infection (specifically Plasmodium vivax) has persisted for a prolonged period and the efficacy of other medications has begun to diminish.

Emphasis on Boosting Immunity — Unani herbs help alleviate malarial symptoms and enhance the body's immune system, thereby preventing a recurrence of the disease.
Historically, in Unani medicine, malaria was believed to originate from "marsh air" or "miasma." In its management, Kushta (calcined preparations/ashes) and medicinal herbs hold particular significance. Unani medicine traditionally emphasizes natural remedies to alleviate fever, chills, weakness, and body aches. These remedies focus on:__
1. Reducing body temperature;
2. Eliminating toxic substances; and
3. Boosting immunity. Traditional herbal formulations, such as Habbe Bukhār, are employed for this purpose.
4. Key Remedies in Unani and Traditional Malaria Treatment — (1) Habbe Bukhār: This is a renowned Unani medication administered to treat fever, particularly the weakness associated with malaria. (2) Largin: This is a traditional Unani remedy that has long been utilized for the treatment of malaria.
5. Herbal Remedies — The bark and leaves of the Neem tree are utilized for their anti-malarial properties.
6. Other Measures — Herbal preparations such as Tulsi (Holy Basil) and ginger water, or spices like cinnamon, are used to reduce fever and boost immunity.  7. In the event of vomiting, administer Ark-e-Ajwain or Ark-e-Ajeeb.
8. Burning neem leaves to repel mosquitoes from the surrounding environment.
9. Key highlights regarding the treatment of malaria in Unani medicine:
(1). The use of Kushta—In the Unani system, calcined preparations (bhasmas) such as Kushta-e-Jamarrud, (2). Kushta-e-Simmul Far, and (3). Kushta-e-Sadaf are utilized for the treatment of malaria. These calcined preparations are effective in curing infections and chronic fevers.
